Finally! The trailer for "Across the Universe"!. Think Beatles meets Moulin Rouge. One thing the trailer doesn't make very clear is that this is an all out musical. Julie Taymor, the director, did one of the most poetic, unique and gorgeous adaptations of Shakespeare ever with "Titus" a film worth checking out if you're curious what her style is like.
It's not a great trailer, but it gives you a sense of the trippiness. Doubtless some of you are very excited right now and some of you are having heart attacks in rage, but I, for one, cannot wait to see it.

This trailer has been out for weeks, for the record. And I'm not having a heart attack in rage, I just think it looks like an awful film.

It's interesting to me how many movies about that period directly juxtapose the "drugs and free love" aspect of the late '60s with the "war, death, and authoritarianism" Vietnam stuff. In fact, the dramatic tension of such period flicks often hinges on the conflict between these two things.
I can't help wondering whether it'd be impossible to do a '60s story without cynically relying on the cheap, easy symbolism of the Vietnam War to lend emotional weight to what would otherwise appear to be callow, flighty pop-art.

I think it looks cheesy and melodramatic, and associating that with The Beatles makes me less likely to see it than otherwise.

It looks a bit maudlin, but it's got some interesting bits, and I loved Titus. So, I will give this movie a try.

I've seen many musicals...and many of them were not cheesy.
I would not call musical comedies "melodramatic". By their very nature they involve the expression of normally hidden emotions through song.

We don't need a new Beatles' musical, especially one that is mimicking Moulin Rouge. The Beatles' first and best movie to date was "A Hard Day's Night" there is no way something can come along that would compair to it. Even though I am fond of British men who can sing, hence my obsession with the Beatles in the first place. By the way, my father is insisiting that I disclaim this message as written by me, his 25-year-old daughter with a lot of Beatle paraphernalia on my walls.

Are there ANY good movies about the '60s? Besides the ones actually made during the '60s...

Not a movie, but I remember loving 'The Wonder Years' when I was growing up. I wonder how it would hold up now. TV show, though, of course...

I don't know about this. I mean, there are plenty of movies with The Beatles singing their own music THEMSELVES that I can watch. Or even a movie like I am Sam that beautifully uses Beatles music for the soundtrack. This just seems wrong to me. Wrong.
That said, I don't know if I'll be able to manage to keep myself away from something filled with Beatles music. And also, if it gets some young people to listen to The Beatles that maybe wouldn't have otherwise, then that's always a good thing.
