Put this down as Odd Book Recommendation of the day.
I picked up a used copy of Saraswattee, by Kit Puran Singh mostly to appease my wife's Hindi-ophilia (Love of all things to do with India). Rummaging around on my bookshelf I thought, why not give it a whirl.
Wow.
It has your Science vs Faith clash.
It has murder.
It has culturally sanctified and actually mandated pedophilia.
It has Desert Wisdom.
It has an old Pantheon of Gods that I barely new.
It has a suicidal God, a grumpy Naga, an ancient Demon and geophysicists. The mysteries uncovered are more of the birth of the demon than why the God seeks death.
It begins with a young girl being whipped by her priest until she either finds a husband or dies.
There is incest, bigamy, and even an inter-species marriage that somehow includes the bigamy and incest as well, but doesn't.
Yet very little to 0 sex is in the book at all.
It all happens in one small pilgrimage village, within a week or so, and yet the story takes place over all of creation.
And it has one of the strongest female hero's I've ever read, especially for a little girl.
I highly recommend it if you stumble across it.
