Is this old news here? It may be. I ran across it looking up Romney's relationship with the Log Cabin republicans in his run against Ted Kennedy. couple married in MA seeks divorce in RI
I can't say I foresaw this or anything, but it causes me to shake my head on the whole issue of how conservatives and liberals define "marriage" differently. The article is very right slanted, just saying. I checked snopes, there is not anything on there about this at this time.

We talked about it a bit when it happened, but it was before the whole "this is a trick to sneak official recognition of their marriage status into RI backwards" started percolating.

My stand is I'm saddened someone would end their marriage just to make a political point. I don't think that is a general feature of liberals, but I could see a lot of liberals seeing that marriage, like an unborn baby, could be sacrificed in certain extenuating circumstances. So you don't think it's political, Tom?

I'm unconvinced. I think it's likely. It's worth noting that the point being made here is about civil marriage; IIRC, they didn't have a religious wedding. In that sense, they aren't married for "eternity," and would probably laugh if you suggested it. In fact, merely moving to another state effectively "unmarries" them.
What they were attempting to demonstrate -- if indeed they were -- is that their marriage in Massachusetts would still require a divorce decree to cease to be binding. But if Rhode Island's courts disagree, what they'll actually be demonstrating is that their marriage ceased to be binding once they moved to Rhode Island.
In other words, it's not even necessary to make a political point to end your marriage. You can do it just by crossing state lines, even if you don't want it to end.

As a liberal and I view marriage as a sacrament, a covenant between two people, a contract between those two people and the larger community, and the basis for a family.
How do conservatives view marriage?

This sort of thing happens all the time. It's funny when one side paints it as scandalous that the other side would use *gasp* trickery! Of course, they're really just sad they didn't think of it first.

What I find amusing is that the first quote is from a person from a group set up by people from outside MA, to keep same-sex marriage a MA thing only. Isn't that just as bizarre? Setting up a lobbying group in a place you don't live to apply pressure on a state issue?
(In case your wondering, I find both situations distasteful.)
