...at IMDB's new flash ads that are unclosable and cover half the screen? They make it impossible to actually read IMDB!

Adblock Plus .

It's great for dealing with these types of annoying ads.

I don't appreciate your topic title. I know you're angry. But I didn't want to open this topic because now there will be naughty words on my computer's history. Curiosity got the better of me.

However, I still think that obscene language is rarely justifiable. If I remember correctly, it's also discouraged by the rules and regulations of the forum. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I worry that the increase in advertising trickery on the Internet is baby steps towards what so many of the SciFi writers warn us about, where we have completely intrusive advertisements in our day to day lives, ala the Minority Report movie.

Something does need to be done before it gets that far. We need to establish, somehow, that individuals have a right to what they experience, a right not to be bothered by advertisers.

We shouldn't have to rely on active countermeasures to keep intrusive advertisers out of our personal awareness.

I dread the day when companies start paying people to make friends, only to recommend products to them.

"Hey, do you think Roger's been acting kind of strange?"
"Yeah, he only ever calls when he's has some new product."
"I think he's a corporate Friendfultrator"
"Damn it! I'm going to miss watching Survivor 65 on his Plasma TV."

While I agree with the sentiment, it doesn't really apply to the example given. Last I checked, imdb is free. They have to pay for their bandwidth somehow. Unless you're paying for the service, it seems somewhat bad form to be complaining about the ads. If they weren't there, the service wouldn't be, either. And they're getting bigger and more obnoxious because we're getting better at blocking them out, and that's what it takes to be noticed. If they don't get a certain number of click throughs, they stop buying ad space, and eventually the service goes away.

As with many things on the Internet, I think it seemed like a good idea, but it's gone to crazy extremes, and I think it's becoming broken. Lots of sites need ad money to survive, but the ads need to be done differently, and better. I don't have an immediate solution, but I'm sure there's one out there.

Umm... last I checked "pissed off" wasn't particularly naughty, but merely a more extreme form of "angry". I've certainly seen far worse words or phrases used in Hatrack thread titles before, as well as that very phrase. However, if the more experienced members agree that it is indeed not to be used, I will edit.

The only ads that truly bother me online are the ones that are noisy and/or take up half the screen. They are just obnoxious and are ensuring that I will never click their ad. The other ads though (the smaller, quiet ones) don't bother me, and I will click them if they do interest me.

"Pissed off" is "obscene"?!?

And if you're perusing the Internet, the words "pissed off" are generally the least of your worries in your cache, no matter what you do.

You are correct that obscene language is prohibited by the rules. I strongly disagree that "pissed off" is obscene.

"Pissed off" strikes my ear as being very, very mildly obscene. More obscene, than, say "fart" or "ass" but less obscene than "bitch" (used as a noun and not literally referring to female dogs), to use a whole series of words that I've seen people object to but that are, to my ear, quite mild.

My feelings are pretty much what yours are on this. In general, as long as an ad doesn't interfere with my viewing the site, I don't care, and will even try to click on them from time to time. When an ad does get in the way, though, I tend to just adblock the entire domain the ad is coming from. Fortunately, most of the annoying ads are from a couple sources, and it tends to leave the unobtrusive ones intact.

I do consider that term to be one of the obscene ones, I just don't care that it is being used in a thread title. Cursing just doesn't bother me all that much.

I was just talking about the phrase "pissed off" to a friend of mine the other day. I, as a rule, don't curse. I rarely say "fart" and never say "ass". I'm of the opinion that there are always better and funner words to say (such as "flatulate" or "posterior"). However, I routinely say "pissed off". To me, it's akin to "very very angry". Ticked off = very angry. Angry, upset, perturbed, distraught, etc = angry. So ... yeah, that's my two cents.

And on the actual topic, I just visited IMDB and didn't have any problems. Firefox blocked two things (I didn't check to see what they were), but yeah, other than that it was the same as always.

I have firefox, but for some reason there are these new flash ads, not even popups, that stick to the page, but cover large portions of it. I can't close them. I think it may have something to do with old and broken linux flash player now that I think about it.

Though I'd forgotten about St. Pats, and I do have a couple of beers down in the fridge now that you mention it... [Big Grin]

Though now that I look at a calendar, st. Pat's was yesterday.

A fart's a complex operation that you should be proud of. Imagine if something went wrong with it and you wound up farting out your ears.

"pissed off" and "ass" are both phrases I don't allow my students to use in class. I think they're both more obscene than "fart." I don't find them offensive in this context, but I have known people who did, along with people who find "suck" offensive as a pejorative, which I do not. If someone were to complain about the use of "pissed," "ass," or "suck" in a thread, I would find it to be a bit much. However, on Hatrack, we have generally made a practice of holding thread titles to a tighter standard than their content, since you can avoid thread contents, but their titles stare you in the face each time you refresh. I wouldn't fault anyone for using "pissed off" in a thread title, because there was really no way to know anybody would find it offensive. It is certainly not a violation of the TOS. However, now that someone has expressed offense, I think a polite person would edit the thread title out of respect for that. I wouldn't expect the same consideration in thread contents, but in the title I would.

I sometimes say "pissed off", although I try not to. I don't say a**.

But I completely agree with what Icky just said about someone being bothered by it in the title.

Ah, okay. I see the "body functions as humor" as being a childish thing, and see the word "fart" as being tied closely with it. The words like "fart" and "turd" rub me the wrong way for the same reason that at least the first of those do you, but for me it doesn't have to do with obscenity at all.
