You know, you can make pie crust out of flour, some shortening, salt and water. It's easy as pie!

I admire the French for how they took regular stuff and made it better -- toast, fries, braids, bread, and kissing.

Quiche is absolutely disgusting. It makes my stomach churn to smell it.

It didn't used to be that way. It was merely unappetising before. Then they served it at work one day. Within an hour and a half, I felt a migraine coming on, so I went and had a nap during my break. I woke up feeling even worse, so my co-workers told me to go back to sleep, they could handle it.

When I woke next, I felt utterly awful, migraine and nausea. I called for someone to come drive me home, because I was too ill to drive myself. Made it just barely home, and for some reason (I think my very enthusiastic puppy) couldn't get in the door, and vomited all over the front step. All that quiche. It looked gross, it smelled gross, it tasted gross (still somewhat quiche-tasting as well).

I've not been able to smell it since, and when they serve it at work, I can't be in the kitchen with it and have to go elsewhere.

But, I DO love poutine, even if it's Quebec-French. [Big Grin]

I have the same thing with Frito Chili Pie. I had one on the fourth of July about 20 years ago. I still can not even eat Frito's. Not that I am missing much.

Lies! Unless you like pie without any filling, perhaps. Any pie with filling must of necessity be less easy than pie crust alone.

Yeah, but you still have to BUY it, OPEN the can, and POUR it in. That doesn't sound easier than doing nothing.

And honey, if you think opening a can (pop-tab lid or no) and pouring it out counts as a noticeable amount of effort . . . why the heck are you making pie crust from scratch to begin with?

So it magically appears in your pantry? That's neat. And let me point out that noticing an effort is nowhere near the same as saying that it isn't worth the effort. Making a pie, even with a ready-made pie crust and can of filling with a pop top, is sill not as effortless as, say, breathing.

A new name! Yay!

My boyfriend keeps insisting that he'll make rice quiche for me and I'll enjoy it. He says it's a totally different object. I'm highly skeptical, but someday I'll let him cook it in his apartment (NOT mine), and I'll bravely make a go at it.

I'm just happy I didn't develop an aversion to something I actually LIKE. Quiche is no big loss, IMO.

That is why I can't really have chocolate and mint flavors together anymore. Last thing I ate before having to be taken to the hospital with probable ulcer? York Peppermint Patty.

I love chocolate and mint together but don't like York Peppermint Patties at all. It's the gooey mint.

I don't even think they were the patties, come to think of it. I think they were those things...when they came out with the York peppermint patty in a sort of solid chocolate-mint Pringles-chip-shaped form. Do you remember those?

Perhaps, but now I'll never know. The very smell of eggs baked in a pie crust (or any crust that I know of) makes me gag. I can't be in the same room.

I admit it's easier when it's not the quiche at work. Those things were a cut below even before I got sick.


On the chocolate and mint front, I maintain that a mint teabag steeped in some high-quality hot chocolate is simply amazing. Once there was whipped cream involved...

I don't think mint and chocolate go well together in general, but York Peppermint Patties are the exception.

It's interesting they call it the Garcia Effect - because when I was a kid, I once got very sick after eating cherries and didn't want to eat them (or cherry flavoured food, drink or ice cream) until about two years ago.
And now I've got over it, I love Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia.

It's ironic destiny, or something.

Wow, that's weird. If I throw up after eating something I like, I won't avoid it afterwards, I'll be picking through the pile to see if any of it's still good. I guess I don't have taste aversion. :shrug:

Mint Chocolate Chip is the number two ice cream flavor ever. And the mint chocolate chip brownies my mom makes are to die for. Who's talkin' smack about my mom's cooking?!

Wow, the "Garcia Effect" eh?

Now I know what to call my extreme aversion to beer.

I haven't been able to drink it since I was 15, when I got alcohol poisoning from a party after funneling something like 9 beers in an hour.

I can still drink alcohol in other forms, but even smelling beer makes me nauseous, and swallowing even a sip will make me extremely queasy. Two sips and I will hurl.

I've always explained it as "It is as if my body thinks it is poison", and it looks like that's a pretty accurate description of it.

In Israel, American ice cream is soft serve. American chicken is fried. American tests are multiple choice. I think there's another one, but I can't recall it off hand.

The epitome of mint + chocolate goodness are Baskin-Robbins Chocolate Mint ice cream and Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies. Oh, and --

York peppermint patties: good
Junior Mints: bad

I developed a smell aversion for a type of perfume I was wearing when I got sick as a teenager. Anything smelling remotely similar makes me fell sick to my stomach now.

The only things I like about the French are their food, language, history, wine, land, art, philosophy, and literature. Other than that, they suck.

I used to have an aversion to eating eggs unless they were mixed with something else so that their taste wasn't as noticeable. Every time I ate an egg by itself or in a very simple recipe like scrambled eggs and ham I'd get nauseous. I think that has left me now, though. I can enjoy an egg salad and hard boiled eggs.

I think I have developed an aversion to alcohol which is why my friends hate to drink with me. I enjoy getting drunk as much as anyone but if I can taste the presence of alcohol in my beverage, I will not drink it. So far, my only alcoholic friends seem to be Merlot and Sky Blue...

I'm with Jenn on this. While I do taste the difference between homemade crust and store-bought, it's not worth the extra work to me -- even homemade crust just doesn't excite me much. I frequently leave much of the crust, even when it's homemade.

Less in quiche than with pie, though. Partly because the coating of egg-white on the crust makes it yummier.

Mmm, see, I will eat a home-made pie crust, and enjoy it, but I do not eat store-bought crust, it tastes disgusting to me.

Try making it with pineapple juice instead of water. The acidity of the juice makes the crust tender and delightful.
