I just looked down at my Probability and Statistics homework and noticed that one my problems had boiled down to the following:

( 0-0 ) - ( 1-0 )

And immediately thought... why is my homework winking at me? And how come it's eyes close vertically?

It took a minute for my brain to process what I was seeing, a further minute to realize what I'd just thought, and then several more minutes spent laughing at myself. I think mayhap I've had too much caffeine and too little sleep of late.

Anyone else had similar experiences in late night caffeinated work sessions?

As a philosophy student, the work done before midnight is always little bizarre.

Working on Gnostic scripture at 4am after downing a gallon of Starbucks...never recommended. I think smoke came out of my ears the last night I tried that.

Hehehe...
I have a story, not exactly what you asked about, but it's related:
During a all-nighter at college, one of several as it was finals, me and my friend Karen decided to take a little break and walk around the dorm.

It was a cold winter night. We were both slap happy and wacked out. I looked up and saw the moon...it was so bright!
It was so bright I had to cover it with my gloved hand. I asked, "Karen! Why is the moon so bright?!" She was like, "I don't know! That's so weird!"

Then we realized we were looking at a streetlight.

I'm surprized the cops weren't called on us for laughing too loud. [Smile]

Well, it's 2:00 and I'm just starting my monologue for tomorrow. I do my best work when I'm exhausted and confronted with a looming deadline.

*sigh*

I can't even bring myself to do work until it's the last possible minute. I just now finished powering through a 5-page research paper on the BIA (due in about 10 hours, started about 10 hours ago).

I now have to write a critique of an article about euthanasia (due in 6 hours) and a summary of an interview (due in 6 hours as well).

Life is good.

Truly though, I can't write for school unless I'm drunk or extremely tired. Somehow I still manage to get A's on papers... now if only I could bring myself to do the small homework assignments...

Edit: Done with everything!

As someone once said, "It's not really homework unless it's due tomorrow."

My story is that I was up all night editing a big project for a film class. And when I'm sleepy and working on a computer, I tend to said out loud the things I'm clicking on, e.g., "File, Save".

So I finally finished the project, and moved on to packing all my belongings, since I was leaving for home the next day. After I had finished packing my whole backseat, I realized that something I'd need was on the very bottom. Without thinking about it, I stared at my car and said, "Edit, Undo!"

Sadly, it doesn't work in real life.

I've gotta say...independent study is fun sometimes, but sometimes it makes me want to stab things with a thousand sharpened highlighters.

Especially since the particular class I'm working on now involves 9 very large assignments. I've finished, um, 1.5. I have until...May?

Oh, I fail.

I just did essentially this. I was working on my prob and stat final and realized I'd been going about a problem the wrong way. So I went and erased it to restart only to realize as soon as I'd finished erasing that I did in fact need need something I'd just erased. My first thought:

"Oh crap, CONTROL-Z!! CONTROL-Z!!"

For the first week after my college roommate got one of the programs which allows you to give the computer voice commands, any time one of our friends came in the room they'd shout, "Close file! Don't Save!"

The fact that the voice recognition program wasn't very good was kind of a mixed blessing.

o_O That's just cruel!! If any one ever did that to me and had it work I'd have gutted and skinned them and put their head outside my door on a pike. Seriously, not cool!

Did it ever work?

I neurotically save my work every 30 seconds with ctrl+s function, and every few hours change the file name. Ho ho ho.

Every time I approach my locked front door from outside, I find myself reaching for the unlock button on my keyring. The trouble is that it unlocks the car and not the house. Someone needs to sell house door locks that respond to radio transmitter buttons.

We have these "wave-and-dry" paper towel dispensers in the bathrooms at work. They have little sensors and all you have to do is wave your hand across the front and a little servo motor unrolls the roll and dispenses a paper towel without you having to touch anything. After getting used to this, I now always think we have "wave-and-wipe" toilet paper dispensers in the stalls. Sadly, we don't. [Smile]

The voice recognition program was horrible. My roommate had to spend 30 minutes repeating phrases into the mic to teach the program his voice, and even then, he could hardly get it to work. Someone else yelling as he ran out of the room was no chance to work, but it was funny as heck.

I do that all the time. I also use my keyring to 'unlock' friend's cars, stranger's cars and my office. Basically, if it's locked, and I want it open, before I've thought it throught I'm punching the button in my pocket.

I also enjoy exclaming "Deleted!" or the variance "Beleted!" when cancelling or deleting just about anything.

Wouldn't that make it easier to break into the house? All you'd have to do is figure out the frequency...

I'm the exact same way. The similarity is a little creepy actually. Apparently I do my best writing and critical thinking at 4 in the morning, so exhausted I can barely stand, my eyes so watery I'm practically crying.

At least, that's how I justify my procrastinating. I had four weeks to work on my English term paper, but I just couldn't bring myself to get going on it until the night before it was due. I finally finished it at about 5:30 in the morning, three and a half hours before it was due, but I got my A.

A few years ago, I was sharing an apartment with my best friend (his dad was the property monitor, so very cheap rent). I came home one day to his cousin practically screaming into his fancy new remote, "DVD ON!!!"

It didn't work. He said it was worth $200, but he "only" paid $50.

I remember getting an A on a high school English paper I wrote by hand while laying half-asleep on the couch. It was seriously one of the best concepts I've ever come up with for a paper and easily the most cohesive paper I'd written to that point.

I got to college and discovered my English professor had written his Honors dissertation on the exact same subject, using the same angle I had used, only a tad more fleshed out. I actually found his dissertation at random in the library stacks and flipped through it. It wasn't something he'd ever pointed out.

The same subject actually came up in one of our class assignments. I repeated the idea, exactly how we had both written about it previously, and got an A and a very nice, warm comment from the professor.

It was a very useful idea that I had, half asleep on my couch that night.

Sadly the method of half asleep on the couch don't work so well for math, physics or computer science [Frown] Rather the method of LOTS AND LOTS OF CAFFEINE is normally how I go...
