from 1 to 10.

1 being barely able to turn the computer on much less reading your email to 10 where your capable of doing godlike linux scripting to automate your daily routine and can diagnose any problem whilst being halfway across the room and intimately familiar with software and hardware related stuff.

It's hard to say any more. Back when I was doing it professionally, probably about 8 or 9 (I don't program much), now maybe 6-8, since I don't stay as current any more.

Well, if you use that scale, I'm a 10. Though I'm far from perfect, a more demanding scale would certainly lower my rating.

My rating is such an irregular number, it has it's own symbol: ☼

This is probably hard for you to grasp, so it would be best for me to explain using the underlying theorem.

All else being equal, ☼ always equals infinitely more than Blayne.

There, that makes it better.

That's hardly the only alternative.

My favorite outlet is writing nasty, venomous posts to vent . . . and then NOT POSTING THEM.

Blayne, I read PC's comments as an attempt to be humorous, not as a personal attack on you. Yes, it had elements of being mean-spirited, but I'm pretty sure your reaction was a bit too much. You should always watch what you say on public forums (something I figured your last few years on Hatrack should have taught you.) Rudeness is never acceptable, no matter whose forum.

As for the need to vent, especially against someone who certainly has been pretty rude to you in the past, I agree with rivka--find a more healthy way to do it that polluting someone's forum. There's plenty of healthy ways to blow off steam; forum posting is a really bad choice. I am glad you recognize the need in yourself to find a healthy outlet for pent-up frustrations, but you should find another solution. I hear Yoga can do wonders...

If "10" is shell scripting and being able to diagnose computer problems at a distance, and "1" is being barely able to check your email, I'm about a 16.

Fer serious? Darn, I can't get on SR at work. I'd love to print it out on good cardstock, frame it and hang it on my desk at home so that I can always have something to look at whenever I'm feeling low and need a reminder about how lame one can truely be.

See, the danger is that you might ACCIDENTALLY hit the post button. Then you land in a heap o' trouble.

.....

That's why I write my nasty, venomous posts in Word, and then, if I feel like it, copy & paste to the forums.

The nice thing is, I rarely feel like doing that.

I'd give myself an 8. But not on your scale. I don't know Unix/Linux, but I do know 3D CAD and data management. In the overall scheme of things, I give myself a 5 but in my area of expertise it's higher.

Back in the day, I would just create Quake bots with the names of my enemies (whether abstract or persona;) and then start matches. This may or may not get you arrested now, but it was a good way to vent.

It gets weird though, "Biology midterm tripped on his own grenade. CVS ate Organic Chemistry's boomstick..."

"Computer expertise" is like "good at sports." Each phrase attempts to represent a multi-dimensional attribute with a scalar value.

Especially since removing yourself from Hatrack hurts you and probably not Primal.

Blayne: You bring an unique interesting and IMO good dynamic to the forum, ignore PC.

Just pretend you are getting one of those Microsoft wants to download an automatic update messages, you click ignore and think no more on it because the alternative can only end in tears.

Blayne,
I agree that PC is rude, mean, and often out of line with his dealings with you. PC can definitely act like a jerk.

On the other hand, you need to realize that your often immature, self-centered, and rude behavior both contributes to you getting picked on* and is something you'd be much better off growing out of.

There was an adult way of handling this. There's an adult way of handling a lot of the problems you are having. These ways not only will generally raise the opinions people observing the situation have of you, but they also work.

You can't control the bullies of the world, not even with the whiniest whining or most blistering usage of juvenile profanity. However, you can, to a large extent, control your reaction to them. It is hard work to leave adolescent behavior behind, but I think you'll find that it will net you many rewards.

---

* Seriously, it's like you walk around with a big bully-target painted right on you.

Since Primal lives far away, I think you'll discover you don't have to worry about him hitting you with sticks if you ignore him.

In other words, your objection doesn't apply here.

I know this can be true as I have personally experienced it. But I can one up you, the "friends" they gather in my case were my former group of friends including my best friend.

But Blayne adults interact in many significant ways differently then children or teenagers. If you feel somebody is singling you out for cruely treatment, say so politely, I will at least listen. I know adults are not immune from the bully syndrome but keep the moral high ground, when somebody sticks his foot out to trip you you gain nothing by gnashing your teeth and growling. Just get up and keep walking, I promise they can't follow you here.
