I have a Fender Jazz that I got for my birthday in 2001. I intended to become the next Lez Claypool but unfortunately I have decided that dream will never be realized.

I've kept the bass in pristine condition, and I want to sell it with a soft case, hookups, and a small but decent bass amp.

Would selling it to a guitar store be a good idea, or would I do better to ebay it? Wouldn't shipping costs be significantly high for items that heavy/large? I do not have much experience ebaying items, and the one time I tried it I was not very happy with the result.

About what price could I expect to fetch with those items at a guitar store? At ebay? Are there other avenues for selling it that would be favorable?

I'm probably going to call some guitar stores today to see if I can get estimates, but any knowledge anybody could render on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

TIA!

If you want a specific idea on the pricing, you're going to need to find out the exact model number and year of all of the products. You will ALWAYS be able to get more money from eBay than by selling it to a guitar store, unless the guitar store is out of their minds.

You can also try Craigslist.

You could try your local newspaper. I've always had pretty good luck buying and selling with mine (I've bought and sold a Fender Strat) and it avoids the hassels of ebay.

The price will vary widely depending on which Jazz it is. If it's the standard, I wouldn't pay more than 4-450 for the whole package. If it's a deluxe or american, maybe 7-750. If it's something fancy, I would sell it to a collector, cause they'll know the true value.

Will the guitar itself indicate what specific Jazz model it is? Where do I look?

It should say somewhere on the head. You can compare here.

Made in America or Made in Mexico?

It makes a HUGE difference, especially since I don't think Fender was making American Made basses in 2001.

American Deluxe has four knobs for volume and tone. Standard and American have three. What kind of amp is it?

I traded in a Gibson Les Paul to a guitar store one time and got take in a big way. Don't go that route. I still kick myself for that one. I also have sold guitars on EBay but be careful on the shipping. I ended up paying more for shipping than I charged for one of them.
