We have a '97 Chrysler T&C minivan. The A/C compressor is coming on only after the A/C system is turned on. The condenser/radiator fans do not turn on, and no cooling is ocurring. We're pretty sure it's not a frion problem. Anyone got an idea of what's wrong? Thanks in advance for any advice!

If the fans don't come on at all, my first thought would be a fuse or a relay. Maybe a bad connector. I'd check those first.
And isn't the compressor only supposed to come on after turning the AC on? I thought that was typical. Does it engage and stay on, or does it switch off again right away? If so, it could be a low refrigerant charge. Though I think the fans are still supposed to come on, so maybe not.

When I see mini van A/C problem I automatically suggest getting a freon boost. That's been my parents huge problem with the van they have now.

Out of curiosity, why do you say you're pretty sure it's not a freon problem? Have you recently had it leak-tested or recharged?
Primal: It seems most people just use "freon" to mean "refrigerant," regardless of what chemical it is. It's certainly easier to say than "refrigerant" or "R-134a," anyway.

On a related note, my 2002 Jeep Liberty A/C was working fine last summer. I went to try it out a few weeks ago and air is blowing but there is no cooling happening. Is this likely just a sign of a needed recharge (or leak to fix)? If so, any idea of a ballpark cost this would incur?

If it just needs a recharge, you can do it yourself for under $20. Some auto parts stores will let you rent a set of gauges (for a refundable deposit) so that you can test the pressure.
