So I'll be visiting my family in southern Illinois the week after next, and we're planning on a day trip to St. Louis. Is anyone here from that area or have ideas on what to do? We went last year and went to the top of the arch, and it was very cool.
Any help would be appreciated.

I would "third" the zoo. You don't have to tell your mother how many of your internet friends live there. The Switzers licorice plant has tours (with samples. Budwiser gives samples too.) And if you are into baseball, there is a museum at the Cardinals stadium. I like used book stores. And, last time I was in St.Louis I found a songbook with words and music for all the Gilbert and Sullivan operata songs. It had brief story lines and pictures of sample costumes that had all been hand tinted. It was a super find.

What are you interested in and I'll tell you what to do.
We have real Blues, Baseball, and the National Bowling Hall of Fame.
There is no food finer that what you find in any diner on "The Hill".
There is this big bendy thing down by the riverfront. Its called, "The Arch". While its not quite free, the museum beneath it is, and is quite interesting.
What are the dates and I'll give you some other ideas.
Oh, and there is Grant's Farm. Grants Farm is free, like the zoo, but with expensive parking so its not free, but they do serve free beer in the park. You ride through an animal preserve in the middle of the suburbs, then go to a big petting zoo and beer stand. It is quite an experience.
The Science Museum is having a special display on "Super Heros and Science"
The Magic House is like the Science Museum for young-uns.
The Transportation Museum is like a giant train depot in gridlock.
Or the Muny is playing some great free, or low cost shows.

The saturday in August we were going to go to Grant's farm it was full, as in they wouldn't let you park and go in and were turning people away telling them to come back tuesday.

Hey Dan, I've got no problem meeting internet weirdos. (Plus, I've already met you.) We'll be staying at the Millenium Hotel, downtown. Bob's there for a conference, and John & I will have to do a little schmoozing, but we should have some free time. We get in Sunday night (this Sunday) and will be there through Wednesday.

It's not that you're all internet weirdos(though everyone here is one, including myself ). I would just find it weird to meet up with fellow weirdos while I'm spending time with the family. If I was by myself, no problem.
I have been on the big bendy thing, Dan, and was quite surprised I fit in the tiny 'gyro-vator' to the top.
Looks like, if nothing else, we'll be going to the zoo!

We did the City Museum downtown. Check that place out- weirdest layout ever- on purpose. Very different no place else like it.

As long as you're going to the museum beneath the Gateway Arch, you should actually take a ride on the Gateway Arch. I don't know how much it costs, but it looks cool, and it's something I've always wanted to do.

I'm from St. Louis, too, and I miss my city!!
Near the arch there is a great club called Broadway Oyster Bar. They have great live music and some good eats.
If you want a GREAT rootbeer float, you can go to the U-City loop (Delmar Street) and taste some in-house drafted rootbeer. Good Stuff! There's an Ethiopian resturant on the same street if you're in the mood for some seriously ethnic food. Blueberry Hill is a club that plays live music, too and that's on the same street.
I know you've already poo-pooed another trip to the arch, but for general information...if you haev a national parks pass it is valid at the arch. We saved a ton of $$ using it.
Edit: Oh yeah, and all the suggestions about food on the Hill, oh yeah! My grandmother was Italian and that's where she went to eat. That would definately be good eats!

DKW: I'll email you and Bob about possibly getting together this week. How does your Monday evening look? Sasha and Cindy will be available then too.
Let me second the "City Museum". It is basically a playground for kids of all ages. The not only let you crawl through strange tunnels in the floor, ceiling, and walls, they encourage it.
