Ever since school ended, I've been really lonely, and it finally occurred to me that I should try a new hobby or some kind of weekly activity where I might make new friends, and just get out.
What hobbies or social activities would Hatracker's recommend?

Unfortunately, my hobbies aren't social activities, so I'm no help on finding that combination. What kind of interests do you have? What type of person are you, in general?

Daughter number one enjoyed volunteering at the local library. (except the getting up early during the summer) You are probably a book lover anyway if you hang here.

Yeah, you might look for a local tennis club and see what the prospects are.
Depending on the size of your city, there could be clubs or organizations for photography. All my photography is pretty much a solo act, so I'm not familiar with what a camera club would actually do.
It depends on what you mean by "techie stuff", but that could lead to a number of social activities. I'm assuming you mean "computer technie stuff", though. Could you elaborate?

As far as sports go, you ought to try cycling. It doesn't require much socializing but offers the opportunity, and it will keep you fit without wearing down your joints.
