The whole "being called ma'am" thin has happened to me more than once as well, Loren. It's an odd thing--you'd think that facial hair and a bald spot would tip them off, but you'd be wrong.

I think it's more situational than personal. Like, probably 3/4 of the people shopping in stores are female, maybe. So the clerks' brains' language centers just get used to calling customers "ma'am".
I have the same thing kick in with my brother, who calls me "honey" (something that creeps me out to no end) but only when I nag him. It's totally subconscious, I think, but when I nag him his brain confuses me with his wife. Or he could be subtly teasing me for nagging him but he's usually not that good at pretending.
My niece used to call her dad "David", but only when she fussed at him for something or other. What do these two examples say about the uxorial relationships in my family? I'm not sure I want to go there. Posts: 6246 | Registered: Aug 2004
