I would be interested in your opinions of this documentary.

I think it was not only well done, but important. It was very difficult to watch, but also had some very inspiring moments.

Did any of you see it? I highly recommend it (and not just because my cousin is featured in it).

Care to give more details? I have never heard of this documentary, but as I love documentaries I'm sure I'd be interested.

It is a documentary about the sexual abuses crisis in the Catholic Church. It has extensive interviews with adult victims and advocates for the victims, historians, theologians as well as very extensive interviews with a priest who committed sexual abuse.

Here is the website if you are interested in learning more: http://www.deliverusfromevilthemovie.com/site.php

CAUTION: Even the trailer is difficult to watch and not for children.

Wow, that's a hot potato. Thanks for the warning kmbboots.

Your cousin's in it?

Either way, I think I'd like to see this film, but I don't think I'm ready at the moment. I still haven't watched Schindler's List for fear of trauma. Saw Saving Private Ryan tho...hmmm....

It wasn't as difficult for me as watching Schindler's List. For one thing, not anywhere near as long but mostly, while the descriptions of what the abuser did are pretty horrifying - and he is doing the describing! - we are not shown abuse taking place. So not really visually graphic*. All words. People telling their stories.

I think it is important to watch because a good deal of the discussion is about what the Church is continuing to do to avoid dealing with this even now.

*except in context. Seeing the known abuser walk down a street filled with children is pretty creepy for example, but we don't see any abuse or overt violence.

I haven't seen that yet. In my "line of work", I get asked about the so-called scandals quite a bit. I would be very interested in seeing this documentary. Do you know where it might be available?

Thanks for bringing up this topic.

I ordered mine from Amazon.

I don't know about rentals, but I'll check.

Oh, and Earendil, my cousin (technically once removed) is Fr. Tom Doyle. He is a priest and canon lawyer who has spent good part of the last twenty-some years being an advocate for victims of abuse. He is featured pretty prominantly in this film.

Looks like Netflix/Blockbuster has it.

If you find you need more information about this topic, Tom has co-written a book as well. "Sex, Priests, and Secret Codes" which, despite its rather lurid title, is a rather scholarly treatment of the subject. Lots of footnotes.

Haven't seen it, but I recently read a book on atrocities and cover-ups in the Mormon church. I think this king of things goes on a lot and organizations are eager to be better than everyone else by pretending it doesn't happen in their own circles of influence. Time to stop pointing fingers and shifting blame, IMHO.
