I read this book when I was about 15, I believe. I really remember loving it. I'm thinking about reading it again to see if I would still like it -- I'm hoping that it wasn't one of those books that suddenly becomes increasingly stupid with age.
It was a...strange book. I don't remember a lot of it, but it was about a boy who somehow ends up in this strange world (just a village, particularly). There was some sort of different race that persecuted the humans, I think. I'm a little sketchy on the details.
Anyway, there's "magic" of sort in this world, and the boy has to learn some of it. It has something to do with music as well.
There was a sequel as well (The Serpent Mage). I seem to remember enjoying that one less.
But yeah, for some reason the memory of this book just popped into my head the other day. I remember it making a significant impression on me. I really need to read it again just to remind myself of what it was all about.
Anybody else remember this book? What'd you think about it?

Yes, I read it years ago, and remember really liking it. I do remember liking the serpent mage a bit less, but both books were pretty good. Some parts of it were patterned a bit on celtic mythology, especially the sidhe and the separation of worlds. I've read the Infinity Concerto fairly recently, and still liked it, but I haven't read the second book in years. I'd definitely recommend tracking it down and reading it again, though.

I love it. I actually have the omnibus in hardcover as well, which contains both books. And an afterword, which is kind of cool.

That, and the collection of short stories "The Strength of Stones" are my favorite Greg Bear works.
