Anybody going to this?

There aren't a lot of authors there that are popular on Hatrack, but it still looks like fun. I get to volunteer for it, which will be great, I hope. The best part will be wearing a bright yellow "EVENT STAFF" t-shirt.

Also, I'm hoping for a hello with Terry Pratchett. [Smile] There is a triathalon, a war protest, and a few other events of the day.

Protesters: The cameras will be at the Library of Congress Authors' Tent, so if you want to get on C-SPAN, set up there.

I can't organize anything - I'll be gone all day and I have a thing that night - but is anyone else going to this?

I'd much rather stay home and read than go to a book festival. [Smile]

Heh. That's a good point - I think most of Hatrack is introverted. And it isn't like the books will be on sale or anything.

My daughter's school was putting together a field trip to go down, but I told her we see so little of each other I wasn't going to pay extra for her to spend a Saturday away.

The sad truth is that refurbished X Box I ordered died after 1 day, so we can't even play Halo 3 tomorrow and will, I'm afraid, be doing stuff around the house. I feel like a terrible chump, and Refurb Depot is taking Sukkot off, which is, like, this entire week. We've got a call in to Microsoft who needs 3-5 days for determining whether to issue us an RMA. I suspect it's a ploy to see if we'll work out something with the Vendor.

Well, probably more than you wanted to know since this is a book thread and all. But, yeah, or neighbors are probably getting sick of that mysterious piece of furniture on the driveway that my husband won't let me bring into the house. So I imagine it's another trip to the dump for Bjork.

Also, it's the Relief Society General Broadcast at the stake center. I'm taking a carload of ladies and maybe afterwards we'll TP President McKonkie's house.

What's its purpose, then? My first guess would be to promote reading or somesuch, but then I figured that the people who'd be interested in going to a book festival are people who don't need reading promoted to them. It's not like we need to galvanize the reading population against the hordes of functional illiterates or anything like that..

50 authors in one place on one day giving talks about writing and signing things.

pooka, that's what I have tomorrow night. THere is a dinner before and they are collecting toys for the children's hospital. I love how organized my stake is.

The L.A. Times Festival of Books is fun, and we go about every fifth year, when there's a speaker or poet we want to hear. I'd imagine the motivation is similar to attend this. [Smile]

I'm a little bit bummed, though. Other LoC employees get comp time for volunteering, but we don't. Management is very, very old school here, and not always in a good way.

There's a good way to be old school?

Does LoC stand for League of Champions?

Oh, wait. Wow, you've done a pretty good job with the whole secret identity thing.

Sure. Refusing to do layoffs until bankruptsy is looming, paying for all medical insurance, fulling funding the pension plan - that's all old school in a good way.

See, I was thinking about how cool Adidas running suits, wall clocks as jewelery, and big boom boxes on your shoulder are. Old school is too cool.

I went last year. Authors give talks and sign books. They do sell some books. The Magic School Bus was there [Smile] . There was a big wall where everyone could write down their favorite book. It was fun.

So porteiro really stopped posting, I guess. We'll have to watch the newbies extra close, or maybe he's going to write a landmark. There's only been like 9 landmarks in 2007, if I'm reading the archive right. When I saw that, I wished I'd done an 8000.
