Hey folks.

In the spirit of showing off my useless accomplishments, I've decided to fulfill my previous promise to post some parts of my thesis project and my would-be published essay from last year. The first essay was not published, by the way, but was apparently considered among the top competitors for only 8 slots out of several hundred.

Looking back on it, the essay is problematic even for a student publication because it assumes a great familiarity with both of the subject pieces and authors. That's fine for a survey course thesis in which I had one week to write it, but out of context it loses some immediacy.

The second essay is the first 1/3rd or so of my senior musicology thesis, which has already been presented at the University of California research conference in 2007, but is not yet complete.

(Note: I ask you to please, for my own safety with the university, NOT quote these papers in any responses and not share them with non-forum members. If there are quotations I will have to delete the thread or have it edited. These works are copyrighted to me and I do not grant permissions for their use in any context but the forum itself. If any of the Hatrack lawyer types thinks it's a bad idea to share work this way I'll take advice on that. I am not seeking publication of either paper.).

The second essay should comprise at least another 20-30 pages.

Not included would be an in depth analysis of Stravinsky's synthesis style in light of the analysis of Eliot. Also there will be included sections on Debussy and William Carlos Williams, with appropriate contextual history and tie-ins to the present works. There will also be a section dealing with recent criticism regarding the topic and expanding upon the subject to include narrative space and its position in the academic literature.

Just finished.

I'm impressed. I love the comparative pairings of music/literature. My papers never had such in-depth analysis. I'll admit to some of it being over my head without the music in front of me.

The thesis is a presentation and paper. It's aimed at a pretty in-the-know audience. In comparison with the people who will be in the panel, I'm the least informed about all the ancillary topics here. Possible exception being poetry, but there will likely be at least one English prof. there as well, with a specific emphasis in modernism, so probably not.

I have a soul-cracking headache exacerbated by all attempts to read on a monitor and I pretty much digested every word and it was pretty totally still worth it, ow.

It was especially interesting because I have this basal tendency to judge artwork from a romantic sense, which lends things like realism an inherent and enriching contrast when viewed.
