I know we have some Scouts and Scout people on board, so I have a question. I started working for a new company--going back to entertainment. By entertainment I mean I work with magicians providing after school entertainment, day camps, classes, and assorted magical events.

Its a tough job, but I get to do it.

Next Saturday I will be at a Cub Scout Pow-Wow offering the services of our team of magicians for the Blue & Gold banquets.

Neither my boss or I am satisfied with this offering. We'd like to offer some of our other services to the scouts, but I don't know if that is allowed.

Could somebody who knows direct me where to find out, or simply tell me?

What we want to offer:

Magic Show Fundraiser--we spend the day teaching the scouts how to do a show. Later that night they do a magic show for the audience of parents, friends, and family who have all paid to watch. This has worked well at several small schools in the past.

Magic Workshop Training--We offer a group of magic/circus/puppetering supplies and instruct the "den Mothers" how to use them and incorporate them in some of their meetings.

Magic Kits--to be sold as a fund raiser to the kids, with simple magic tricks and instruction.

Day Camps--Week long or day long camps teaching Circus Skills or Magic, to be done at their camps over the summer.

Field Trips to the Stage--Where they come to a local stage and do a workshop/perform/and watch a magic show. (About $5.00 per child).

Would any of these be against scout rules? Thanks. (I'll be back on in a few hours to get these answers if any).

We seem to lack magicians where I live. But I don't think those suggestions would be a problem. However, I'm just a Boy Scout. The actual rules are known only to the adult leaders.

That longer, more involved stuff probably wouldn't fly. I don't think it's necessary against the rules, but there's not a lot of well, scouting, going on there.

I can't get ahold of JT Stryker who can recite boyscout rules backwards, forwards and often inside out. Sorry

I don't think any of them are against the rules, but I don't think you'll get all that many takers for most of them though.

You could always call your local scouting office and ask if you're really concerned about presenting something against the rules. They're really the ones that would be making these rule decisions. At the pack/troop (or den/patrol) level you can do almost any kind of activity as long as you have an adequate number of adults along. (edit: there may be some more rules for cub scouting. I wasn't ever really involved there in any leadership way. At the boy scout level the above is accurate.)

I don't foresee many takers for the fund raising one since cub scouts participate in the popcorn sale in the fall. (And generally there just isn't all that much call for fund raising for cub scouts.)

The day/summer camp ones probably won't see many takers either, but I could be wrong. Generally cub scouts day camp is all volunteers and overnight camps will have a paid staff (whose pay isn't enough to interest you).

(was a scout, then was employed by the scouts.)

When I was Cubmaster of a pack, we were not allowed to do any fundraising besides selling tickets to the Scout Expo.

Also, day/summer camp is generally geared towards scouting skills, merit badges, etc. I don't see the leadership doing a magic camp instead of traditional scout camp.

We went to all kinds of one-day activities at local places when my brother was a cub, from painting pottery to going to JPL and getting a geology badge signed off by a geologist who specialized in MARS. (That was cool. Sibs were always welcome in my brother's troop, so I got to go to everything, and after that one we all laid on the ground outside and the Mars Rover "walked" over us!)
