I'm trying to play DVDs with MPlayer, and I cannot get the darn things to play. Even when I tell the computer to open the DVD using MPlayer, the program opens but the DVD doesn't play.

Anyone have an idea how this works?

I don't know what the problem is with Mplayer.
I've had good luck with VLC, a free player from
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
But I rarely watch DVDs on my computer, mostly video files.

Right click on the MPlayer window, go to the Open . . . submenu, and choose Play DVD . . .

That works on my Linux box, at least.

And VLC is better.

Oh. That should've been obvious.

You're right, VLC is better. I was just trying to work out whether my DVD drive is screwed up, or VLC is being bad. It's the drive. [Frown]

But thanks!

It might not be the drive. I believe that on windows, both MPlayer and VLC use the system DVD decryption capabilities. That could be what is screwed up.

To verify it is the drive, get someone with a desktop with an extra drive bay to try out the drive.
