Bale and Ledger in full costume and makeup...

I'm going to guess that Ledger's Joker gradually develops into the slightly more more classic-looking version seen here from the less traditional look seen in earlier photos.

The "less traditional look" is actually due to story.

Joker ends up in custody for part of the movie, after having the tar beaten out of him. Which is why he looks so messy and disorganised in a lot of pictures.

I love the one with his coat blowing back.

I have mixed feelings about Batman's new suit. Are criminals a cowardly and technophobic lot, so now he chose to fight crime as a robot bat?

*sigh* I really don't like the look of this Joker. The main thing that bugs me is the lack of white skin (this was seen in previous pictures and it can still be seen at the neck level in these ones). I mean that's part of who Joker is and to take it away seems really odd. That's really the big one that bothers me. There are some minor things (the fact that the hair isn't consistent in color and the way the smile looks) that bother me a little bit, but really I wouldn't complain about those if the skin was all white. I'm still very much in a "wait and see" type of mood for this movie, which is not how I typically am for super hero flicks (I'm usually super hyped).

EDIT: When I say lack of white skin, I mean anywhere except his face. In previous pictures, you could see his skin was normal on his neck and his arms. Here you can see it on the neck again.

It worked for me. Batman's suit looks pretty cool.

I'm fine with the Joker not being completely bleached-out white. It makes him more clownlike, but insanely so. I really wasn't expecting Heath Ledger to turn out this well in the Joker guise--I mean, it's Heath Ledger. When I look at him, I can only think of The Patriot, really. I'm just glad he can pull it off so well.

And I don't see much difference between this Batman outfit and the one from Batman Begins. Or maybe the above criticism is targeting both, which seems odd to me, as I thought that the Batman costume was really cool in the first film.

Why is it part of who he is or why does it seem really odd? To the first, that's just how he's always been as far as I can remember. Every time I've seen him he's been white all over (or at least white on any exposed flesh we've seen). As for the second, I don't know why it's sticks me as really odd to see it as white face only but it just does. It bothers me quite a bit. Not enough to get me to boycott the film or anything, but enough that I have next to no hype for the film. Kind of sad since Batman is one of my favorite heroes and Joker is the classic villain.

Whoa, those pictures look fantastic. Very much in keeping with the modern, gritty design of "Batman Begins"- the look of Ledger's Joker feels very much in line with the re-interpretation of the Scarecrow in the first film.

Someone clearly hasn't seen "Brokeback Mountain." [Wink] Regardless of one's feelings about that film (though I loved it), there's no denying that Ledger demonstrated some serious acting chops. He's not just a pretty face, any more than Bale is.

Since when has Joker's whole body been all white? Have we ever been shown his skin other than his face, neck, and hands? Even then he is always wearing gloves, I thought. I don't I assumed either way, to tell the truth.

Edit now that I've seen the pictures: I think Ledger looks great - as in terrifying. That bat suit has definitely been modified from Batman Begins.

We've seen him without a shirt (or with an open shirt) a few times that I can think of. At the very least his arms and neck are white (his legs too, if I'm remembering correctly).

Nicholson certainly didn't show any other skin in the Tim Burton version. It was kinda assumed considering how he got that way in the first place.

But he did paint himself colored at one point, so who knows?

If you're going by the comics, since forever, basically. Yes he usually wears gloves but there are many images of him with more white skin showing. Two that come to mind with a lot of skin: Hawaiian shirt and shorts in The Killing Joke and the shower scene in Arkham: Hell on Earth.

In these recent pics I noticed the flesh-color on the neck, but wasn't sure if that's intentional or a makeup oversight at the photo shoot. (It only seemed visible in one pic.)

I'm still excited to see how this movie turns out. I'm really intrigued to see how Heath Ledger pulls off the Joker.
