It's a new show on Fox, right after American Idol on Wednesdays (9pm EST). Before the show, the contestants go through a lie detector test to determine the answers to certain questions. Then, they are asked revealing and personal questions on stage, and if they tell the truth, they get money. Five true answers to get 10,000, five more to get 25,000, etc, up to 500,000, I believe. If they lie on one question, they lose everything. At any time they can choose to keep the money they have and walk away. They have three friends and family members sitting there watching them, and any of them can veto a question before the contestant answers, but they can only do that once.

So, anyway, it was cool at the beginning -- questions like "Have you ever had a sexual fantasy while attending mass?", "Have you ever gotten a passing grade in college just because you were on the football team?", etc.
Then the guy was asked,"Is the reason you've been putting off having kids because you don't think your wife Catia will be your life long partner?"
(They had already asked him basic questions about his life. And his wife was there with him).
He said "Yes" and won the bucks.
Okay...I mean..that was bad. It wasn't entertaining. It was just sad. And the guy was smiling the whole time.
I guess if my husband were going on that show, I would say, "Just say whatever you have to say to win that money, I trust you more than a lie detector test." But I think there could be some things that would hurt you for a long time even if you pretended it didn't. For one thing, I definitely think the friends/family should be able to veto as many questions as possible, not just one.

I don't know. I guess it could really all be staged, like American Idol. [Wink]

That's the Fox Entertainment channel, the one that gives us Prisonbreak and House and Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles. Not to be confused with Fox News. Though some will probably try to.

All these "reality shows" are proliferating because of the writers' strike. Once the strike ends, hopefully, some of these obnoxious reality shows will go away.

I saw a promo for that tonight, and they brought the guy's dad out who asked something like "If I apologize for not being there for most of your youth, would you forgive me?"

It was at that point that I said, "Oh HECK no" and put on BSG.

If you're a contestant on a reality show of this type I think you should be pretty well aware of what type of questions are going to be asked. Therefore I don't feel sorry for them at all.

However, one thing that confuses me, before a contestant comes out the announcer says they've asked this person over 50 some questions to determine the truth. So does this mean that the contestants already have heard all the questions that are going to be asked?

I think the 50 questions are so they can study the readings from the lie detector more accurately.

I assume that they don't hear the same exact questions, but they hear several other related questions that get to the truth of what they're going to be asked on the show.

It would be so much fun to go on this show as an actor, a complete fake. If you could cheat on the lie detector test.

They have already been asked all these questions in the pre-show, and that's where they determine truth or falsehood. They're not hooked up to a polygraph at all while the cameras are running.

I don't understand why they act like they're going to surprise the contestants with the upcoming questions.

Have I mentioned how much I hate the artificial time-lapse before the answer is revealed, in order to build suspense? They do that on all these prime-time gameshows, but the ones in this show are ridiculous. I could have left for the kitchen when they said, "your answer is..." and been back with a sandwich before they said, "true."

A waste of time within a waste of time. It's like the televised equivalent of an Escher lithograph.
