There's this troll on a forum that I visit. A real stickler. I'm fairly good at dealing with trolls, but this guy has been a bit hard. He's been trolling on this forum for ages, and people deal with him in the worst possible ways.

But I think I did fairly well. Heh. Check it out:

http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=932999&topic=40303988

I'm SenseiJinx and he's "HI_EVERY_BODY" (also known as level_20).

I've tried several tactics in other topics. Obviously arguing never works with these kind of people, because you can never win and it just gives them the satisfaction they want. Ridicule hasn't worked. Ignoring him definitely doesn't, because everybody else gives him too much attention. Sarcasm, no good. Coupla other things.

So I had to bring out the big guns: complimenting and agreeing with him. [Smile]

That worked for me with a forum member who posts both on here and Ornery. He was flummoxed. I actually THANKED him for his off-base criticism. I had motes in mine eye, and he had sequoias. It sure shut his big mouth up. [ROFL]

Out of interest, which forumite are you thinking of?

I was just trying to recall a single incident in which you ever shut someone up, as opposed to watching them fall silent out of resignation or bafflement or disgust. [Wink]

OK, it was you. You went off on some 500-word rant that had next-to-nothing to do with the current conversation I was having. Your criticisms were of highly dubious usefulness, which is often true with you. Not always, but often. Granted, it's my opinion. I'd bother digging it all up from the wayback machine, but I myself don't care. If you care to see it dug up, I'll tell you what some keywords were, assuming it was archived at all.

Ah. I figured that might be the case. Rest assured, if I ever fell silent when speaking to you, it was not because I'd been stunned into grateful quietude. [Wink]

You still got the last word in the conversation, Tom. I believe, IIRC, it was

"Well, I'm certainly disarmed by the response. [Smile] "

And that was the end of it. It's the baselessness of your criticisms that I find almost endearing.

Why couldn't you take the hint and leave this alone? Are you happy, now that we've dug up its lifeless skeleton? I'm not.

Actually, I am. Because you've exposed yourself, even in your charitable moments, as being a dishonest troll. And the beauty of it is that you don't even realize it.

I would also like to say I think you should be the one digging this up from the Wayback Machine. It would have been sometime between May and December, 2002, to be exact. I'm not the one who cares, so I shouldn't have to do the digging.

I never meant for this thread to degenerate into pointless name calling, and old memory dredging.

I just want to say that I completely agree with you on your criticisms of Tom. I find them to be totally on base, relevant to the discussion at hand, and I thank you for your input into the conversation. We totally, completely agree.

I've got to say Orin, your post has really changed the way I'm thinking on this particular issue. You couldn't be more right, in my opinion.

I don't think steven is a troll. He's interesting and makes Hatrack spicier. How often do you meet people that believe that organ meats preclude dentistry, or that sungazing is good for you?
