I just received word of a family nearby who lost everything in a house fire. Mom, Dad, Aunt and four kids aged 2-9. Red Cross put them up in a motel, they have food...what they don't have is clothes.

They tried the Salvation Army already; no dice until Monday. Meanwhile, the adults have to work and the kids need at least one decent set of clothes for school/daycare Monday morning.

I have the boys and the mom covered, and the kids are busy going through their toys to share with them. (I adore the generous hearts demonstrated by my children this evening.) Any ideas on getting the rest of the family clothed? Especially on getting some whites for the cafeteria-working adult?

Thanks for your help, Hatrack.

Dang, I don't know. There's bond to be a thrift store besides SA open on Saturday. There's one like that near my house.
Other than that ALL i can think of is places like Family Dollar since I hate walmart, but I don't know if they'd give things comp though...
I wish I could help more.

Would you be comfortable calling someone in the LDS church?

I think I can get you the phone number of the bishop of the ward we visited when I was there. And I know they would be willing to help, they were such nice people, don't you think?

ketchupqueen, that's a good idea since you already have that connection. Boon, I was going to say that if you contact the pastor of just about any local church that I would think they should be able to drum up help from their congregation on Sunday.

I do think they were very nice, and if they'll help, I can put them in touch with the family directly. Wow, that would be awesome.

Would you like me to call or give you a number? The bishop of the ward you are in is responsible for the welfare of everyone who lives in the ward boundaries, not just members. I found a phone number that you can call which is actually for the executive secretary, but call now and tell him you have an emergency and need the bishop to call you and give him a number, and I'm sure you'll get a call tonight. Then you can explain the situation and give the contact information to the bishop, who will work with the RS president to take care of their immediate needs.

Gosh, I hope he's not out of town.

If you don't get a call by tomorrow, I'll find a way to get the bishop's number directly (I'll call my bishop, he has a directory of all bishops in the U.S.)

Any chance the cafeteria whites could be shared by a co-worker or from the employer?

I just want to express my love of Hatrack. Threads like this make me believe that the world is still a good place. I'm sorry I can't help. I'm glad the whole family is safe, at least.

In other news, my husband an children are stranded in a truck stop in Wyoming. I'm in Maryland and I feel very helpless because they're my babies and I can't reach them.

Agreed. Hatrack makes me feel like I'm closer to understanding what a real community is.

Oh, no!

Is there anything we can do? Other than pray?

Oh yes, and I spoke to the lady of the house at the number you gave me, kq, and she seemed to have no idea why I would be calling her. [Confused] She said she'd make a couple of calls and get right back to me. This was at 9am and it's now 11am. [Confused]

Boon, I'm sorry if the woman you spoke with (a bishop's wife, I presume?) made you feel awkward. She's probably just not used to hearing from people outside her own congregation. If you didn't say this already, and you talk to her again, I'd just explain that you are not involved with any church right now (if that's true), and when you were looking for ideas for help, your LDS friend suggested that the Mormons in your area should be happy to help a local family in need and have the system in place to do so. That should get her thinking on the right track! ;-)

I know from experience that Saturday morning can be a tough time to get hold of people. She may have left messages and be waiting for calls back; I'd call her back and ask if she'd had any luck or if you should start looking elsewhere. Sometimes it's just a matter of resources being stretched thin -- all the available "worker bees" in the ward already helping a family move or something.

I hope you're able to find the clothes you need for this family. Sounds like you have been a great help to them already.

My in-laws Bishop called a bishop in Wyoming and he came and got them to shelter, so that's good. I'm sorry to hear they're letting you down, though, Boon. You might try some other churches as well. Baptists in particular might like to embarass the Mormons [Wink]

Though now I'm mad at the Insurance company, which apparently doesn't pay rental car or lodging with complete coverage. I think we'll be changing companies, even if it costs more.

WEll, all I could find online was the exec. sec.'s number, not the bishop's.

If you want me to find the bishop's number, Boon, I can still do that.

I think she already called the bishop, and the wife didn't get back to her. [Frown]

Oh, wait. I see she talked to someone at the executive secretary's house... maybe?

Exactly, pooka. She hasn't heard from the bishop at all.

We left a message for our bishop but of course got his machine, too. If anyone else wants to try their bishop, I have the contact information for the family and the name of the ward and stake of the bishop we need to contact...
