Jeez! How many unlikely coincidences can you have between so few characters!

Marius happens to be looking through the wall when he sees Cosette (whom he has been trying to find because he's in love with her) and overhears Thenardier planning to ambush Valjean who he recognizes as the man who took Cosette away years ago. But Marius doesn't know that Thenardier is the man that saved Marius' father's life because Thenardier is using an alias. Thenardier recognizes Valjean because by pure chance he came to Thenardier's apartment to give alms to the poor. Javert is the police officer who Marius calls to prevent the ambush.

That's just in one scene. There are plenty of other coincidental meetings between Valjean and Javert, but the real kicker is:

Gavroche is the Thenardiers' oldest son, who is left homeless when the rest of his family is arrested. Being accustomed to the streets, he chances upon two young boys who are not accustomed to the streets, but have just become homeless because their mother has been arrested. Gavroche takes them under his wing, without realizing that...

His mother had given up her two youngest children because 1. she hates boys and 2. a mistress of a wealthy man made an arrangement with Mrs. Thenardier to take (Mrs. Thenardier's) sons to replace her sons who died, so that she can continue receiving child support from the father of her two illegitimate sons. In return she pays Mrs. Thenardier a kickback from the child support.

These two boys happen to be the boys Gavroche takes under his wing and refers to as "his children."

Confused? You won't be after this week's episode of:

All merely a coincidence.

Few people know that only 14 people lived in France at the time. [Wink]

By the way, my mother's high school roommate was Kevin Bacon's first cousin.

If they were all on a tropical island, I'd think you were talking about Lost.

Or, of course, vast swaths of 19th century literature. Or much of classical mythology. Or...

I dunno. People say that Melville needed an editor, but I've read Moby Dick at least 5 times and each time I find greater significance in every word. Les Miz, however, is largely a waste of words. I don't know why I'm punishing myself by reading an unabridged version. Maybe it would be better if I was French, or at least a student of French history.

I, on the other hand, find Melville really dull. Could just be a matter of personal taste.
