Author Topic: coincidence makes the world get smaller

Yesterday I overheard a cellphone conversation while I was waiting in a line. The guy at "my" end of the conversation seemed to be talking to a clueless hotel desk clerk. He explained several times that he was trying to confirm a reservation that he'd made with his credit card for someone else. He told the clerk his name twice, and spelled it slowly and carefully. Then the clerk apparently wanted the name of the person who would be staying in the room: Orson Scott Card.

When he hung up the phone, I went over and asked whether Card was coming to town. I've never seen him in person. Turns out he's a guest speaker at Vericon in a week. The guy with the cellphone asked me for advice on where to put up posters about the event. I helpfully suggested Arisia, the annual SF con that's happening this weekend, just down the street.

That's my interpersonal coincidence of the week. So, tell me yours: has anything happened lately that made you feel that the world was smaller than when you got up that morning?

I've known about this for months [Smile] I'm also just down the street in Central Square, and plan on seeing him speak for sure--maybe get some books signed, too.

Anybody going to Vericon tomorrow/Saturday? I'll be going to see Card's speech at 6 and get some books signed afterward. Does anyone know how many books we can get signed?

It'll be nice to meet him again.
