A friend of mine turned me onto Ira Levin, and so I went looking for his books. Trouble is, every single one of them is out of print. One by one, I found Rosemary's Baby, The Boys From Brazil, The Stepford Wives, and A Kiss Before Dying used on Amazon, got 'em, and read them. They were fantastic.
Stephen King's novel Rage (written as Bachman) is also out of print, by his choice. Got it used on Amazon, and it's terribly fascinating.
So? What authors or books do you guys love that are out of print?

Lots of Lindsey Davis' earlier Falco books are out of print.
I thought Rosemary's Baby was a much better book than movie. And the ending was much, much more uplifting.

I spent roughly a decade tracking down Lawrence Watt-Evans' older stuff. I could find everything but what I wanted, the Ethshar books, and most of this was before the internet turned into the fabulous book-trading machine it is.
Come to think, I found them all offline save on.

I used to call a place in New York (I think) called something like Strawberry Hill books. I figure they probably have a web presence now, but back in the day, they had an 800 number, and they'd do book searches for you.
I read Rage in the collection "The Bachman Books". Phenomenal. But I can see why he pulled it after Columbine.

Wyrms was out of print for a while. I think I found mine used on Amazon. And then I got it signed and my head squeezed all in one day.

I like Abe Books for out of print and hard to find books.
When I was a kid I really like the mystery books written by Wylly Folk St. John. I don't have any extra money to spend right now, but once I do I plan to hunt them down.

My grandma still has that, from when her kids were little. (If it's the thing I'm thinking of, that is.)

The Brand Bookshop in Glendale will do the same, although they don't have an 800 number.

It's a very, very, very, very long series. I got through the first two and a half one year. I also quite enjoyed it.

I've been looking for the Jedi Aprentice books for my Big Boy when he was in his big Jedi phase, because he digs Obi-Wan (but NOT Anakin "He got married! EWW!").
Got them all for him through the library, except, like, the last two. I could get them online but haven't yet. His interest seems to have waned, so I probably won't bother. The series started a bit wobbly but it picked up after that. I mean, as far as mid-grade scifi franchise things go. (A Jedi kid with a red saber... Oy vey. I think the franchise gigs must require the writer to know nothing about the universe, or something. When an eight year old scoffs at a plot element in a GFFA story, you're just boned. )

Is this a recent development? I saw the series not long ago in Barnes & Noble and nearly bought a couple of the volumes.

Nemesis: the Death Star. It's actually non-fiction. Part 1 is about how Alvarez father and son discovered that it was a meteor that killed the dinosaurs and Part 2 is about how the theory that the Sun has an orbiting "death star" beyond the Oort comet cloud was created.

I tried to buy it at the same chain, and they said it was out of print, not long ago at all. Just a year ago or so.

EL, what a sweet offer! I think the boy has moved on (he's big on Rick Riordan and S.F. Said now), though I have considered going through Half.com or something. I just hate paying higher than original price for something of questionable quality (by which I mean paperbacks that were basically made to fall apart).
