They're going to re-make Highlander.

"What is the Highlander?"
"It's a movie. It won the Academy Award."
"Oh, for what?"
"Best movie ever made."

I'm a huge fan of the series. I don't think I've seen all the movies. Duncan Macleod will always be my favorite.

Still, I wouldn't necessarily mind a reboot of this particular series. I'm curious as to what fresh take they have on immortals. It could flop, it could be good. Depends on who they get to play the lead and what the storyline is.

I'm hardly surprised.

Highlander is one of those films I loved when I was 13, but haven't watched in years because something inside tells me that it wouldn't hold up.

I just rewatched Highlander a few days ago.

It's still one of my favourites, worrisome hair and dodgy VFX notwithstanding.

Plus, soundtrack by Queen.

Soundtrack by freakin' Queen. Awesomeness.

I actually think that could actually be kind of cool, but replacing Sean Connery and Clancy Brown will be tough.

I'd be a lot more on board with this if it was Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale... [Smile]

It's ridiculous that with a story as cool as Highlander there was only one good movie to be had within it. Duncan wasn't a bad idea, they just really screwed up the execution.

But I admit I personally am perplexed as to what basic story a new movie could take.

Look at the four movies... The Highlander series of movies is the only series I know of that, for EVERY sequel, they pretend the prior one didn't exist.

*Macleod kills Kurgan*

"Yay! I'm the only one!"
"No you're not."
"Oh..."

*Macleod kills Katana*

"OK, NOW I'm the only one!"
"Nuh-uh..."
"Where the hell did you come from?"
"A cave."
"Oh..."

*Macleod kills Kane*

"Now I'm..."
"Excuse me?"
"Now what! Where'd you come from?"
"The TV series."
"Well, that's a switch. OK then."

*Macleod kills Jacob*

"Anyone else?"
"My turn!"
"Oh, for God's sake..."

*EDIT*
There have been FIVE movies. Connor died in #4, and Duncan went on to do a fifth. GAH!

I firmly believe that we should combine the Highlander Ethic with politics.

Oh, I don't think the best swordsman should be President.

I just think that we should cut the heads off of everyone that doesn't win.

Talk about adding ratings to the conventions--imagine the ratings as Obama gains a quickening from the beheading of Clinton. Election concession speeches would end with a beheading and big zaps from all the lights.

Honestly, it would reinvigorate the election process.

Yeah, but Clinton's would be a Dark Quickening. Then we'd have to deal with a couple news cycles of Obama being evil before Al Gore stepped in and showed him how to cleanse himself of the evil energy.

Evil Energy--the only truly renewable energy source. Go Green, join the dark side.

Actually, I think I've stumbled onto Senator Clinton's election strategy. As Obama steps up to the microphone to accept the nomination, Hillary will pull out a massive Claymore and screaming "There can be only one!!!!!" she runs up the steps, swings with her much vaunted experience and determination, and removes Obama's head.

I was never sure why they didn't just have more immortals get born. How can you be only one if there's more born at any given moment?

An evil kid immortal trying to form a cult of immortals to overthrow the one adult immortal who's drunk on his own power could have potential.

Anyone remember the Highlander animated series they had on USA Network aeons ago? Grade "Z" animation, murky and ill-defined setting, extremely annoying lead characters.

Plus, whoever wrote the wikipedia article on it seems likely to be a relative of the producer. [Wink]

It's not a matter of justifying the sequel. It's a matter of just throwing the previous script out the window.

SPOILERS, for what its worth...

First of all, I believe it was the first movie (or the second?) where they revealed that Macleod cannot have children.

The first movie was great. Needs no explanation.

In the second movie, in the matter of the first five minutes, it is revealed that:

1) Macleod doomed the Earth to total darkness
2) He and Ramirez are aliens.

Uh... what?

Not to mention that the bad guy sends two henchmen to kill him for absolutely no reason whatsoever. "Gosh, I'm bored today, what am I gonna do... Oh yeah! Let me risk granting someone immortality and send a completely inept pair of lackeys to whack him! That'll be FUN!"

The third movie reveals that there was a guy in a cave all this time, so there could never have been "only one". If he hadn't been released Macleod would spend the rest of eternity wandering about trying to find out who's left.

Oh, and the guy's a wizard. Uh... what?

Fourth and fifth movies are complete blurs to me.
