Firefox v3 is being released tomorrow, and they're looking to get into the Guinness Book of World Records for most downloaded software in a 24-hour period. So if you're gonna download it, download it then...

Can't remember from the last time, so... ...does downloading Firefox automaticly transfer your bookmarks from the previous version to the new version?

They work out the bugs before they release it usually with Firefox. I've been using Firefox 3 since beta 4. 3rc2 which is what I have now is bug free near as I can tell.

Pshaw. Version 2 was so awful I switched back to version one until they stopped supporting it. By then, version 2 was much better.

Hi, mr_porteiro_head. Long time! I think the world record stuff is a good advertisement for Firefox and Mozilla in general. It's not the record per se, but the image it creates: a widely popular software. So, I don't know which browser would you rather use, but if you like Firefox or other Mozilla products, it would be nice to help them out achieving their media spot.
Since I use Ubuntu Linux (8.04 - Hardy Heron), I've been using Firefox 3 since beta. I find it very fast and bug free (notice, though, that I'm no expert). Unfortunatelly, many themes and extensions were not ported to Firefox 3 yet. So, if you already use Firefox 2, you may miss some favorite extension.
Still... if you like Firefox, download a copy tomorrow. As I said before, I bet they could use the advertisement. Their marketshare have been growing steadly, but Firefox is still far behind IE in popularity (since IE comes as default in all Windows boxes, it's not a biiig surprise).

I am using firefox 3 RC2 and I really like it. One thing that I loved was the upgraded password manager. I like the fact that it asks you if you want to save the password AFTER a successful log in. There have been times in the past (in previous versions) that I didn't save the password because I wasn't sure if it was right...now I don't have to worry about it.
I also like how it does bookmarks, and the most visited pages list.

I've been using RC2 and I really like it. There are a few add-ons that aren't yet updated to be compatible, but overall, I really like the improvements. I also installed Weave, which is one of the big things about FF3. It keeps all my extensions, bookmarks ect. in a database and is updated automatically. In case of hard drive failure or whatnot.
Prism I haven't looked at yet. Has anyone?

I'm a big fan of firefox, and have been using it since long before it was called firefox.
And while I'll heartily recommend it to my friends, I'm not sure that I really care how popular it is. It has enough market share already that pretty much everybody feels the need to support it.

I am a fan of Firefox and am already using one of the RC of Firefox 3 but just as most people are saying, I don't really care about beating a World Record.
Though in the end, I probably will still download it today.

I've been using a RC of Firefox 3 for a while now, and Fahim's been using it even longer. I tend to let him download it and see how much it drives him crazy, and when it gets below my irritation threshold, then I install on my computer. But like others said, I also can't be bothered enough to care how popular it is.

They seem to be calming down a bit. Took me a while before I could get the new version, but now I've installed it and am getting it tweaked to my liking.
Compared to my IE7, this thing is speedy.

I downloaded it and about the only thing I don't like (and maybe this is something I can tweak?) is that the history bar doesn't just contain the things I've typed directly into it. Its more like an actual history menu. I like being able to type frequently visited sites into that bar and just using the drop down menu to get to them. But I can adjust I guess. So far its nice though!

Had I seen this thread yesterday, I would have downloaded Firefox 3 today. I got a new laptop yesterday, though, and the first thing I did when I got online was download Firefox, so I have version 2.0.0.14. Oh well.

So amongst those who actually downloaded today, does Firefox 3 automaticly import bookmarks from the old version? I've got a lot of hard-to-find sites linked, and have no desire to lose them.

I downloaded it today (still the 17th where I am... at least for five more minutes). I like it, not too different- I'm not a big extension user. It is quite fast too. I'm happy to supply Mozilla with all of the advertisement capabilities as possible.
EDIT TO ADD: Apparently it's 12:25 where I am. My computer clock is almost a half hour behind. Oops.

One weird thing I'd noticed about 3 (this happened when we tried one of the beta versions) is that it imported some random really old set of bookmarks, not the ones that were there most recently (I don't know where it got them). This happened again with this install, but having foxmarks saved me.

(oh - and all of my bookmarks transferred fine - I didn't have to do anything. It didn't like my version of the FireBug plug-in though, so I will have to re-add that)

While I have FireFox and Thunderbird on my computer and use them often, I prefer SeaMonkey (1.1.9).
One of the most major annoyances of FireFox is the stupid drop-down list instead of the Auto-complete.
In SeaMonkey, I can get to most of my commonly used websites in three key strokes. For example, to get the the Hatrack forums, I simply type 'Ha' and the full URL is in the Address line, then I hit [Enter] and I'm at the group.
In FireFox, I have to take my hand off the keyboard, and use the mouse to select the site from the drop down list of similar sites. Definitely less convenient, and also far less private as I get, for everyone's view, a longs list of websites starting with 'Ha'.
Still there are things about FireFox that I do like, so my use is split between FireFox, and more often, SeaMonkey.
While I did download a copy of FireFox 3, I probably won't install it until for a while. Like others, I'm waiting for the first list of corrections to come out.
Also, I downloaded it because I want to send a message to Microsoft, that they don't own the Internet, and that they can't and shouldn't try to create artificial IE only web standards.

I definitely prefer the drop down menu to the auto-complete, quite often with auto-complete, it will extend what I want to go to into a longer name than the actual site, forcing me to not only move the mouse, but to also try to highlight and delete part of the stupid address bar that I never wanted typed in the first place.

I have to second Wendybird's complaint. I want my old "history" back, where it just listed sites I'd recently typed in...used to be able to get to hatrack just by typing "h", now i get to a few other places in the list first Anyone know if there's a way to get the old setting?

Oh, THAT'S why I got a new version of Firefox when I was reinstalling software to my new hard drive yesterday. Poo.
My only real complaint so far is that the "Open all in tabs" command now adds to the tabs you have instead of replacing them. Not a fan of that one. Wonder if there's a way to fix it.

There's no wa to fix it according to my google search. Apparantly people have been asking for this functionality and Firefox gave it to them at the expense of those who don't want it. They should have given us a check option to turn to overwrite exiting tabs.
I found a bug report on this. Hopefully those developing firefox will listen and give us a way to set it manually.
Until then I'm considering reinstalling ff2 because of this.
But I've been considering switching more and more lately.
The hassle of moving all my IE bookmarks over is part of the reason I haven't switch yet, but I think the other is that I'm always afraid programs like that will come with a bunch of spyware and viruses.

yes, it does.
Edit to add: at least acid 2, I don't believe any browsers currently pass acid 3.
Edit to add 2: I looked it up, apparently the development version of the next safari browser passes the test, and the development version of the nest opera browser is getting close. Mozilla developers are working on it as well.

My history bar is working the same as it did in Firefox 2, the only difference is now each website takes up two lines and has more information
