So the power cord transformer thing for my laptop officially died a couple hours ago, and my laptop ran out of juice shortly after. I'm over at my dad's place at the moment rediscovering the joys of dial up internet, and relearning how to type on an actual keyboard and not a laptop keyboard (which isn't really that different, it's just weird).

Anyway, I placed an order with Dell for a new power cord and changed it from 3-5 day shipping to next day, since I didn't feel like going a week without my laptop. But after I confirmed the order, it said it was 3-5 day, and that I could expect my item sometime around the 24th.

I tried calling customer service and was met with a barely understandable recording telling me to call back tomorrow because they were too busy today, and I couldn't find anywhere online where I could change the shipping by myself.

What would you guys do? Just wait until tomorrow and call back? Or is there something online I can do that I haven't tried? I can't imagine it's unchangeable and that I'd actually be forced to wait the 2 weeks without being able to modify or cancel it if I changed my mind. THanks.

I believe (although I could be wrong) that the dell laptop power cords are universal, maybe you could barrow an extra one from someone.

You might be able to change the order on the order form, they usually send you a link in an e-mail.

They aren't totally universal. I have the biggest laptop, and my mother who also has a dell has the smallest one they make. I tried plugging hers into mine and it said it was the wrong wattage and wouldn't charge properly, so I took it out. I need a 90W cord.

I'll keep an eye on my email box.

In my personal experience, Dell ships faster than the website claims. The best one was a warranty replacement Jukebox, they told me 3-5 days, I had it in hand in 14 hours. Having said that, though, this would probably be the one time that they're right on their projected delivery date.

You will get a series of emails confirming the status of the order. There's bound to be some sort of "problems?" link or phone number on it somehwere.

lyr: Your mom's PA-12 should let you boot and do whatever you want to do just fine. You DO need a PA-10 to charge, but if she's not using her laptop, you're dandy to use her adapter.

How old is the cord? You probably could've gotten one for free...I called because my keyboard was missing some keys and ended up with a new DVD drive and a new power adapter too...

Pix -

Using her adapter won't harm my battery at all? Or should I take the battery out and just use her adapter to run my laptop?

pH -

I think the laptop is going on three years old so...three years. I didn't think about the warranty. I know the warranty for the original battery it came with was up. I purchased an extended warranty on the laptop itself when I first bought it to cover all manner of things, but that extended warranty didn't extend to the battery, so I don't know if the adapter is covered or not. I didn't think to check because I assumed that accessories like that weren't covered.

I DO have a PC that I could use that I bought years ago, but it's so old and riddled with spyware and programs that it's slower than molasses. I keep meaning to wipe it clean and start over but keep forgetting to look for the discs that I need to do that. Maybe this'll be the impetus I need to actually do that.

Correct. You can get away with that adapter for normal laptop use. It's not necessary to remove the batteries - it just won't try to charge them.

EDIT: Too slow. [Smile]

Well I just checked again to try and change it, and it's already shipped. I guess Goody was right [Smile]

I'll just use my mom's adapter until it comes and fudge my way through it.

Thanks for the help all.

You know, the universal ones they sell at most electronics stores work pretty well.

It actually probably will charge it, just really slowly. I've had a ton of power cord issues, and none of my friends or family have 90W cords, so I always end up borrowing a 65W. It can take half a day to charge the battery, but it will happen. Just FYI.

I never call Dell by phone. I always get online to their support site, put in the service tag number of my machine, then choose the "online chat" option and talk to techs there. Much faster and easier and I, so far, have always got someone nice [Smile]
