I'm leaving for Brown in August, and I'm pretty nervous, it's far enough away that I wont be seeing anyone I know, and I don't know if I'm prepared for it. I'm not sure that was the intent of the thread but I'm interested to hear what has to be said.

I'm going to University of Michigan, but I only live half an hour away. I'll know lots of people there, so it won't be completely novel in that regard, but the change in lifestyle will be interesting, and hopefully pleasant. I'm looking forward to it.

I majorly miss my daughter and son #2. Especially because neither chose to come back home for the summer - stay in college town and work. They hardly ever even call any more. (of course, one is working two jobs, and the other is working a night job, so I understand).
Still, I suddenly feel like I have only one child instead of three.

I'm going to grad school in the fall! I'm not going far, but I'm going to have a (school owned) apartment in the city, so that will be neat.

Farmgirl, I wasn't so good about calling for a few years after I left home either. It was really easy to get caught up in whatever was going on at the time. Now that my life is a little more stable, it's easier to get into the habit of calling at certain times. Just keep trying, they haven't forgotten you.

I turn 20 this Saturday. I think it's been 7 or 8 years since I've spent one of my birthdays with my family. That's a pretty big percentage of birthdays. Anyways, I was really hoping to go home this weekend, but it just isn't going to work out. My dad even offered to drive the four hours up here to pick me up then four hours back the next day. But it just doesn't make sense, especially since I'm probably going to get to go home next weekend. But so I was watching a commercial last night that had a happy family in it and I swear I almost cried, I miss my family so much. I'm tearing up now just thinking about it. And for the record, I'm a guy who, whether its a good thing or bad thing, doesn't cry often at all. But man, do I miss my family.

Yess!! Now, you can just move and not leave a forwarding address!
Actually, you might find yourself agreeing to things you might never have done before. This weekend, I drove 12 hours to help my oldest paint a bedroom. Then I drove 12 hours back to work. It was all desert driving and the room was new construction and easy to paint. But, it still made no economic sense. I just like to see them again, and remain a part of their life.

That's pretty cool. A friend of mine graduated from there a couple years ago and now, last time I checked, was teaching there.

Well, I don't think my son wants to teach. I sure hope there are actual jobs out there for him when he graduates.

She's gone. We drove her up on Sunday. Nice campus. She was disappointed to learn that the 1837 Hall is perhaps the most modern dorm building on campus. She was hoping for a quaint old dorm.

Dante! Phanto! Didn't realize there were more brunonians posting here. I grad'd in '02 and am now in Worcester. Cool stuff.

I've been here for about five days and I love it. Phanto, what class are you in? I know what you mean about the Ratty v. V-dub, I don't understand how there can be such a massive disparity in quality on campus.

The better atmosphere and M/W/F make-your-own-waffles tradition made the VDub the highlight of those stuck on Pembroke Campus (farther walk to most classes, for non-Brown people). I admit I have no idea what it looks like now, since it's been maybe 7 years since I've been in it. I'm glad you're enjoying yourself, dante! I'm going to give a shout out to check out the Juggling Club and Tech House if you're interested in either

My three oldest children have graduated from college and/or moved on to their careers (one works for a small software company in Silicon Valley, one has a federal bureaucratic-type job in the mid-west and one is a stay at home mother in Eastern Idaho, after working for several years in banks and title companies).
My 4th child is a junior at the University of Utah, with a double major in Anthropology and Biology. My 5th has been at BYU-Idaho for a year now, and is hoping to go to China for a year to teach English (I am not thrilled about this plan for a variety of reasons, mostly health related). My youngest is a senior in high school, and plans to return to the mainland and attend Idaho State (my alma mater) next fall. She hopes to get into the Radiology program in the college of health professions.

I think Cornell is just finally getting settled back down from the mass influx of new people. Case in point, the buses have thankfully settled back down and seem to be running (mostly) on time again. And the number of lost looking people in the hall outside our lab is back to it's regular level. (also at cornell.)
