*note: jump to end for just the question part...

I have been playing with linux lately. As a hobby I have been exploring ubuntu quite thoroughly---specifically edubuntu.

I have set up a thin client lab, fairly easy to do when all the configuration is done for you, and have several old machines working as thin clients off the ltsp server for Renaissance testing.

Yeah me. I saved money with my hobby!

Anyway, I found a bunch of old imacs 200-800mghz processors with 64-128MB Ram. Perfect for thin clients. They are off of inventory and mine to play with.

I am stuck tho.

I am reading this tutorial on setting up thin clients on different PCU architectures--like powerpcs.

However when I go to my server and run "gksudo gedit /etc/exports," I notice that not such file or folder exists.

This tutorial is set up, I think, with the assumption that ubuntu doesn't have an ltsp server installed--hence the first command :"sudo apt-get install ltsp-server-standalone openssh-server."

I already have the server installed, right? I'm using it with thin clients on old intel motherboards. Do I run that command anyway to set up the server, create the file, or skip the step?

Also, I installed xubuntu 6.01 on an imac in preparation of doing this tutorial. In early version of ubuntu you could download the powerpc, x186, or AMD64. For newer version it only has support for 32 bit and 64 bit processors. Is the Powerpc cpu architecture included automatically in newer version of ubuntu? If so then do I need to update the kernal for an imac to work?

How do I boot to PXE once this is installed? Create a disc? Hold "option" on boot? Hold "c" on boot?

My mind is not getting this. I have googled and read. Most tutorials seem to be a little off---like they say to edit a "dhcp" file when in 8.04.1 Ubuntu with the Edubuntu add on CD that I am using it is called dhcp3-server.

My mind is not wrapping around this imac thing.

*My questions:

When following tutorial, is it assuming I haven't installed the ltsp server yet and am setting it up from scratch? Is that why there is no "/etc/exports" to edit? Or should I reinstall the server from the first step--even if my edubuntu is alive and working as an ltsp server?

Does the latest version of ubuntu (8.04.1) have support for the powerPC architecture included in the kernal?

Once I do this tutorial will it only use PowePCs or will it still support intel based boards?

Do you have any tutorials you know of addressing the last line in the tutorial: "Note that powerpc clients need some special options in the servers dhcp setu"?

Lastly, when all is said and done, do I need a disk to boot off the PXE on imacs or do I need to hold a key combination like "option-command-shift-delete?"

Thank you for any help. I know there are several people here who are quite fluent in linux.

I notice the Ubuntu Irc channel is very helpful.
