I don't know how many of you are out there, but Black Friday shoppers take note. Even though the only major store to release a partial ad for Black Friday is Sears, Best Buy has a contest (provided you live within a certain radius of the 25 participating stores) that has some SWEET Black Friday goodies. You have to write a 250 word essay about your family Black Friday shopping tradition. If you win, you get a $1,000 Best Buy gift card, the 4 door buster items, a LIMO ride to the store, and special admittance at 4:30am before anyone else in line. As someone who has waited out in front of a Best Buy at 4am in the freezing cold, this is maybe the best contest I have EVER seen! I've already got the essay half written in my head, and I only just found out about this.

Good luck to all who enter!

Almost forgot - Link!

My Black Friday shopping tradition is to celebrate Buy Nothing Day.

I don't think I'd win, unless they chose the winner by random lottery. [Wink] And if they did, I couldn't use the prize...

I don't think I'll win either.

But it's free, and a good essay never hurt anyone, so I'll take my chances anyway.

And if I win, well, that'd just be sweet, and it'd save me a lot of Christmas shopping money this year. Suffice to say my entire family would be getting electronics for Christmas.

Ooooo DVDs. I hadn't even thought of that.

I could get every TV show I've ever wanted...

Bitchen deal. However, lacking a black Friday shopping tradition as I do, I think it's time to spoon feed them some contrived capitalist fetish of materialism that has arisen to take the place of any kind of social interaction in my family.

New idea, in order to suppress the vomit welling in my throat I'll just go ahead and skip the essay, I like free stuff, but not that much.

They should've done that the year the new game systems came out. I'd bet people have all kinds of black friday traditions to speak of in those years.

My family's black friday tradition has always been to sit and eat left over turkey, then put our shopping off til Christmas Eve.

I'm waiting for Orincoro to denounce "Black Friday" as a racial epithet.

Hey, don't you know that the original black friday was when the pilgrims would go to buy new slaves after the big Thanksgiving feast?

What exactly is a Black Friday tradition? Isn't it pretty much the same for everyone? (Wake up really early, stand in line in the cold, and have your cart stolen while you peek down an aisle?)

Oooh, maybe I should tell them about the time my Dad insisted on going even though his RA was acting up. That was...fun.

I have never once shopped the day after Thanksgiving. Not once in my life.

Oddly, I never did as a child. Apparently my father was going alone and without my knowledge. (I suppose because I was the recipient of most of the purchases.) It's only since I became an adult that he started trying to make me go with him. I gave in once. An experience in misery equal only to childbearing, in my opinion.

I think I was once dragged along on that awful day, to the mall. The horror! I've mostly blocked it out.

I'll fully admit I'm biased from my experience of working on those days, but I cannot fathom why Black Friday could be considered enjoyable.

Seriously. You have to get up at 1 am, go out in the freezing cold dark night, and stand in line for several hours. Then, oh joy of joys, you get to participate in a demolition derby sans car for several more hours. It's fun how?

I can't think of anyone who goes because it's fun. You go because it saves you money. And it's still less stressful than my job, so why not?

If I lived in the south I wouldn't even give it a second though. The northern states should get better deals. We have to endure more.

Are they choosing essays based on quality, or just random selection?

I need to know how professional to make this essay.

Apparently the "scoring guidelines" are 25% based on readability, 25% based on pertinance to the subject, and 50% based on originality.

Frankly I'm betting the GM of the local store just reads them all and picks whichever random one strikes his fancy, but supposedly they are supposed to score them all individually and the highest scoring one wins. I've already got a hook in mind to try and make mine stand out, but I have no idea if it'll work or not. I was considering writing three different styles and having a family member submit each one, but that sounds like way too much work for a contest I have only a slight chance of winning.
