Hi hatrackers. Turns out I'm not as creative as I once thought I was, because I'm fresh out of fun date ideas that don't include going to sports events, alcohol, or outdoorsy stuff in the summer. I'm good at picking restaurants, but i need some activity ideas.

we both live just outside atlanta, so any local specific, or just general fun date ideas are welcome. I'm google'ing stuff right now, but I also like to hear what fellow hatrackers have to say. Thanks for the help

How about volunteering together? It sounds a little lame, but there are some fun things you can do as a volunteer. Walking the dogs or playing with the cats at your local shelter comes to mind.

Dinner theater (don't know specific for Atlanta)

Ice skating

Christmas Lights -- a lot of places have really neat displays that you can drive through...we've got one in a part nearby that does things like timing the lights to make it look like a ball is going down a hill

Cool.

I came up with ice skating because there is an ice forum near where i live and where she lives. Bowling, walking/hiking trails, miniature golf. i ran those ideas by her and she was just ok with them. hmm, guess i'll have to just ask her what she likes when i see her today. feel free to keep the ideas rolling.

I guess I should have asked what stage of your relationship you are in, because that can make a difference. There are first date ideas, getting to know one another ideas, comfortable partnership ideas, courtship ideas, and rekindling the romance in a marriage type ideas (with and without kids). [Smile]

Nothing says "I'm sexually attracted to you" like forcing an unwitting date to take care of strange dogs.

I say nay.

Museums/art galleries/science center-esque things could be possibilities. Things along those lines.

If he's looking for "cool date ideas", I imagine it's not for a first or second date, since those are pretty standardized. There's a "she" after all. My husband and I volunteer together (not with shelters, since we have our own dogs to walk), and it's great couples time.

Which is why I asked the question about what stage in the relationship they're in. I would see this as an idea for couples who are in a comfortable relationship (dating for a while or married) who are looking for something new to do. It doesn't say "I'm sexually attracted to you" it's more like, "I see you as a friend and partner." Not all dates are about sexual attraction. As a mother of a baby and toddler, my dates say, "A night without children, yay!" [Smile]

Things that have always been the most fun for me--
-kite flying
-writing random notes and surreptitiously shoving them into people's mailboxes
-paintballing
-taking a class together, like.. dance or pottery or CPR
-scavenger hunt!

It just so happens that I'll be in the Atlanta area over the Thanksgiving holidays.

I don't think meeting some strange person from an online group is something to impress her though.

But every year there is a winery northeast of Atlanta that puts on a great big "Holiday Season Kickoff" celebration.

There are entertainers, live music, and a carnival atmosphere, followed by Fireworks at night. Wine drinking was not necessary.

For a couple of years we went there just for the fireworks, and had a blast.

If I can think of the name of it, and its still open, I'll pass that on later.

i really wanted to take her to The Bodies Exhibit today, but my boss shot that idea down. she mentioned it today and she thought it was really cool. she has been before but would have loved to havegone. oh well. tonight we bummed out and then went for dinner and drove around checking out early xmas lights and ended at a Cold Stone.

I think tuesday is a Thrashers (hockey) game.

I don't know if this falls under outdoorsy, but how about horseback riding?

I'm from Dacula, btw. All of my "grown-up" dating took place in NYC, so I don't have any local Atlanta scoop for adults. The most exciting thing we ever did was drive up to Athens.

Are y'all at the daytrip phase yet? We used to go to Savannah all the time. Now is a nice time to go b/c the weather is usually very nice.

Whatever you decide it has to be something you would want to do by yourself without the girl and still enjoy. Also, the volunteer idea is a good one, I've tried this with success at feed my starving children. Of course, I would had volunteered without the girl so either way I was going to have a good time.

Fernbank Science Center, the Atlanta Aquarium or the Center For Puppetry Arts? Any of those sound like fun, depending if you like the forest, the fish or the puppets.

I used to live in Atlanta (in fact, I met my husband and got married there), and I remember the town fondly. If you want a trip into kitsch-land, you could make a daytrip to Helen, Georgia. I believe that from Thanksgiving to Christmas is still their high kitsch season. Well, that and Oktoberfest, but you missed O'fest.

yeah, im pretty dorky and really liked fernbank and the center for puppetry arts growing up. not sure she is into stuff like that though. asfor day trips, helen and savannah sound cool. i also want to go to Tallulah Falls and hike the gorge. oh, and fernbank has "Martini's & IMAX" every friday. ive never been, but it sounds cool.

she made me watch Legends of the Fall, and Catch and Release with her. When i got to pick, I chose Goonies, which she already owned, but was unopened. i think she fell asleep for 20 minutes or so, but watched most of it. still a favorite, but i realized older movies move much slower than now-a-days. if special effects or a close-up doesnt happen every 6 seconds, it's slow now. when did that happen?

she is leaving to go home (South Africa) December 6th, and doesnt come back until after the new year. I know she really wants to see some christmas lights. i dont think we can make it to callaway gardens, but i saw online that Lake Lanier has something. any hatrackers been to that, or other cool christmas light displays around Atlanta?

BTW, if you can't tell, we aren't far into our relationship. Only been dating a couple months. I'm just a little slow on cool date ideas lately because the type of girl i'm into has changed. Being single for the last 2 years I was in college was awesome, but going to parties or out for drinks all the time doesnt work so well now. Asking a couple friends and the internet/hatrack has helped a bunch in terms of giving me ideas. so yeah, thanks again.

Tree Lighting at Chateau Elan on Friday.

That's quite a donation.

Nix on Helen, GA. The kitsch gets old really quickly. But it is sorta cute and funny in a way, I guess. My older brother wanted to start an hourly newspaper to be sold on the street, because he said the benches were full of guys waiting while their wives and girlfriends browsed in the tourist shops. He thought they needed something to keep them occupied. We had a family reunion there a few years back. I thought it terrifically dull. Meeting with the family was fun, I mean, but the locale was exceedingly blah. Next time I hope they choose the beach again.
