Was it worth the ticket price?

Why do they keep making Punisher movies? He's one of the least interesting characters in comic book history.

Even Garth Ennis, who holds the dubious distinction of writing the Punisher stories considered the best, admits to a gleeful disdain for the character.

There are only four viable Punisher stories:

  • Stories told almost completely from the POV of colorful side characters, as the lead himself is emotionally dead and has no real personality. (This is the trick Ennis used.)
  • Stories where the bad guys run around screaming "YAAAAH! You'll never kill US, Punisher!" Then the Punisher kills them. The end.
  • Stories where the Punisher is forced into a team-up with Marvel's super-heroes, and he sticks out like a sore thumb.
  • The Punisher finds out he's really a kooky, demon-hunting angel. (Yeahhhhh...this one hasn't been used much lately.)

I swear, there are so many more interesting "grim and gritty" comic characters if that's the sort of film you want to make. Frank Castle is a psychopath who's good at killing. Period. Best used as a secondary character in his own story.

I think marvel is just scrapping all the older movies, and making new and better movies!

They did it with the hulk too...

The new Punisher movie is not a Marvel Studios release, though they did act as a production company on it. The decision to reboot the franchise was made by Lionsgate, which currently holds the film rights.

I see a Family Guy manitee in there somewhere...

"What about Due Process Man?"

:cut to courtroom:

"Due to the violation of the defendant's 4th amendment rights, the search of the defendant's foot locker, which revealed 38 bloody knives, a variety of plans to assassinate the president, nuclear weapons, and the bodies of 4 hookers, evidence therein obtained is deemed inadmissible, and the defendant is free to go."

"You've done it again, Due Process Man!"
