I know there was a recent post on the merits of audio books, but what are some recommendations of fantastic must reads? As far as MY interests go, I'd love some good non-traditional fantasy or Sci-FI.
His Dark Materials series were AAA fantastic
David Sedaris "When you are Engulfed in Flames" was really good (but the first I've "read" of his).
Neil Gaiman's "Anansi Boys" was really good, but I can't find anything similar.
"How to Make Love the Bruce Campbell Way" was terrific too, again there's nothing else like it.
Doctor Who audiobooks tend to be average-ish.
"Ender in Exile" was a good book, but a lot of the narration was weird. There were several voices, several people "doing voices", and several accents that were downright bizarre.
Currently "reading" "The Gypsy Morph" by Terry Brooks.

The Terry Pratchett audiobooks of his Discworld fantasy series are all very well done. My favorite is Thief of Time.

Stranger in a Strange Land's audiobook is amazing, as is The Moon is a Harsh Mistress (Though not to the same degree).
On the topic of Heinlein, I hated the version of Starship Troopers the first time I heard it, but I re-listened to it at a later point, and enjoyed it very much the second time around.

Maybe a pro would do a better job of these books than the volunteers at the library for the blind, but I find that listening to his books on tape is very difficult. I never know who is speaking and he has about 3 names for each character, making it a bit of a mess to follow.
