My daughter and I were in a head-on auto collision this evening. We're both all right, albeit bruised and shaken up, but I hope no one will think ill of me if I don't feel like contributing any more to discussions just now.

If not, speaking from the experience of being on the wrong end of an accident, you absolutely should, even if you feel perfectly fine.

We are glad to know you are ok, and as the others have suggested please make sure you and your daughter do get checked out medically.

Thirding the very strong recommendation that you both see a doctor if you haven't already. If you wait too long (sometimes as little as 48 hours), the other guy's insurance will do everything in their power to claim that any physical injuries are NOT related to the accident and deny responsibility for payment.

We've been checked out. I have some fairly lurid seat-belt bruises, as does my daughter, but it sure as heck could have been worse. I've been prescribed some muscle relaxants and told to keep up on OTC pain killers. Thank heaven for seat belts and air bags.

Essentially, I was passing through a green light and a van going the other way began turning left as I entered the intersection. The witnesses on the scene all seemed to agree that the yes, the light was green my way, but the other driver says he thought he had a green arrow. I'm hoping when I get a copy of the sheriff's report that the other person's insurance will accept that this was a no-fault on my part; I certainly don't see anything I could have done.

Thank you all for your concern. I really, really appreciate it.

Haha yeah that is very true. Seat belt bruises and airbag bruises are infinitely preferable to steering-wheel shaped indentations where your teeth used to be. I hope the recovery goes okay!

So, today, on the way to the police station to pick up a copy of the accident report for our insurance company, I got rear-ended while driving our other car.

...

Words fail me.

I'm going to swear off driving for a bit.

Then there's the Ohio couple that had their car stolen when they were in the hospital being treated after being in a car accident. story

My sympathies to Sterling.

I hope it wasn't another serious collision? [Frown]

That sucks anyway.

Depends on your definition of "serious".

Not serious in that I don't seem to have any new injuries (aside from a slightly stiff neck), the airbags didn't deploy this time, and the car remained drivable post-accident.

Serious in that, as it's a '96 Civic, the damage it has sustained is sufficient for it to be considered "totalled".

As you might imagine, I'm having a fairly hard time driving right now. I feel like I have to triple-check everything, and my pulse starts racing when I'm going through an intersection where people going the other way are preparing to turn left, and I get really angry when drivers around me do things that are risky or foolish. Okay, that last one isn't terribly new. Angrier than usual.

I'm still really lucky in some ways; I have insurance, and I haven't sustained any debilitating injuries or any pains that won't go away in a few weeks (cross fingers.) I keep reminding myself of that. But it's hard to feel lucky right now. I went seventeen years without being behind the wheel of even a minor fender-bender, and now I have two accidents in less than seven days.

It's going to take me a while to trust the drivers around me again.

That really sucks. I hope you don't have too much trouble with insurance adjusters.
