I know baby-eating is a popular pastime on this forum. With that in mind....

So* I've been reading the blog over at Overcoming Bias for a little while now, and Yudkowsky has just posted the first installment (of eight: the index page) in what appears to be a gripping novella. I'm certainly looking forward to the rest as it comes out. Warning: there is some profanity, but it shouldn't be too much for most of y'all.

* Yeah.

*bump*

linky again

The whole thing's posted now. It's pretty good. Not polished by any means, and there are a few holes and odd assumptions, but it's definitely thought-provoking. I'm inclined to prefer the Normal ending to the True ending, but... I dunno, you'll have to decide for yourselves.

Well, certainly from a storytelling standpoint the true ending is better. But if I lived in that universe I'd rather go the Superhappy way. I think.

My only gripe with the "True" ending -- which is a far better ending -- is the whole "rapist" bit. It's not that I don't understand what point he's making, but rather that I don't think he sells it well enough. (Just as an example: in a society where nonconsensual sex is such a way of life that people who'd criminalize it are considered shockingly prudish, would the Pilot really muse that grabbing a woman's breast without her permission confirms that he's a pervert?)
