I think I want to do a CSA this summer, but I'm having a hard time finding a good list of CSAs that exist here. That just has to be quite a few - this is a crunchy area with lots of water, and I know there are farms around.

Does anyone know of any? Ideally, I could buy a half-share and they would deliver, but I can pick it up if there is a drop off spot somewhere around Alexandria.

My coworker just set up a CSA in our office here in Fairfax. I'll ask him on Monday for details or online information.

This question comes up on the DC LiveJournal community fairly frequently. This post is about a DC-based pick-up CSA, which I assume is a bit inconvenient for you, but if you scroll down and read through comments there's a discussion of NoVa-based CSAs as well.

Yeah, I think I've missed. They are all full. I'll have to remember earlier next year.

Yeah, ours has an early bird sign up in November, and previous members get preference. It's definitely too late to sign up here.

Actually, it seems like we ought to be hearing about distributions pretty soon.

So, my coworker suggested you check out localharvest.org. It looks like there are plenty of CSA's still taking new members in NoVa, and a fair number deliver directly to your house. Our office is using virginiagreengrocer.com.

Community Supported Agriculture. You buy a share in a farm's harvest up-front, and they deliver boxes of whatever's in season weekly throughout the summer.

I don't know if they have a program like that, but Polyface Farms, made famous by Michael Pollan's book The Omnivore's Dilemma, is near Staunton, VA. If they don't do that, they probably can point you toward who does.
