People have suggested Avast! and AVG anti-virus to me, instead paying for Norton or McAfee.

Does anyone have experience with these? Or any other suggestions?

I use Avira Anti-Virus Guard, and while it sometimes updates itself at inopportune moments, it has served me well. The biggest complaint I have against it is that it advertises its premium version with a big window after each update. A minor inconvenience considering I haven't had any virus problems on my current machine.

I can't really compare it to others, since I've only ever use Avira.

Edit: Whoops, typo.

I have used both, and Avast seems to run faster and just as efficiently.

I also use AVG in conjunction with Ad-Aware, I've never had a problem.

Also getting the NoScript addon for FireFox is fantastic as it blocks everything you don't want to run in the background while you browse. Initially it's a pain because you have to train it to unblock certain things, but once you've cycled through all your regular web pages you won't ever turn it off.

I think a good virus program is secondary to good browsing habits and other preventative measures.

Yeah, pretty much everything he just said. Except that I use Avast, and I'd highly recommend that as well.

Avast works fine for my desktop, but it slowed the initial services load of my laptop to a crawl.

AVG has worked all right for me in the past, but I've been hearing occasional disgruntled murmurs from people using version 8+.

Sterling - Avast has an option (under Settings >Troubleshooting) to "Delay loading of avast! services after other system services".

This is designed to speed up your start-up (it worked for me!)
