Or free modeling in general? Sketchup is mostly appropriate for linear, architectural modeling. trueSpace and Blender are free and easier for more organic modeling though both are clumsy in their own way.
Silo is another free one that I have just barely learned of. I think it may end up being the best of all of them, but I haven't researched it much.
