Its not something I do often, since I am not the church going one in the family. Yet I try to give him free rein to find his own path of faith, so if he wants to go to church, I send him, and if he asks me to go with him, I go.
During this service (Baptist, to be exact) there was a lot of music sung, with words in a high-tech multi-media show projected on a screen for all to sing to.
As I am singing I see lines that begin to worry me.
"His name shall be in lights" (He's a movie star?)
"His name shall be the brightest He is the evening star"
And I went--stop. I thought that was Lucifer. As the song dropped into a refrain begging us to give "him" all the glory, all the praise, all the light, I began to wonder--couldn't this be a song to Lucifer? Wasn't Lucifer the jealous Angel who did not like the idea of Man stealing his glory, his due, his light? Are we sure we're singing hymns, and not something darker.
A new song popped up.
This one had the same main verse.
"Take from me all that is me And fill me up with you."
Now I can get behind, "Take away my sins and fill me up with your love" or "Take away my wrongs" or "Take away my hate" But asking that God take away everything that is You?
That is the Borg.
That is the Daleks.
That is the Cybermen.
God created me as a unique individual. Should I beg to be erases and replaced with a Jesus clone? This isn't want Jesus preached--that we must disappear into some robotic version of him.
Or am I wrong about these songs.

That resurrection reminds you of vampires doesn't mean that resurrection is evil.
Jesus said that he who loses his life shall find it. That doesn't make him the Borg. It means the Borg is a twisted evil copy of what it means to be a disciple of Christ.
The light of Christ and the Holy Ghost is given to us so we can tell the difference between the Good and the Evil. We don't have to shun the Good in order to avoid the Evil.

My mother was trying to get my son to go to sleep, and he was scared, so she told him "it's okay, Jesus is watching over you".
My son freaked out. "But, he's DEAD!" my son screamed.
She had to explain the whole resurrection thing, as my son was convinced that Jesus was a zombie. He didn't believe her.
Eh, I guess that's what happens when you let your children be open with religion. Both of my kids are convinced that reincarnation is the only thing that makes sense.

You might want to stop thinking at this point. Deconversion is apparently quite painful in many cases, and thinking too hard about what you hear in church is reportedly often the first step.

As for the Evening Star bit, I think I heard that Jesus took that name away from Lucifer. We had a church in town that was the Church of the Evening Star that used to weird me out for the same reason.

I think this is more of a problem that most (but not all!) modern day Christian Music is terrible. It's poorly thought out, poorly written, and usually has a lot of shoddy theology. Just take him to a church that sings decent hymns/worship songs.

"The morning star" and "the evening star" both typically refer to Venus.
