I don't know if he had still posted on this forum or not, but as a friend of mine, I know that for quite some time he obsessively posted on this site.

Bean was killed in Afghanistan just a few days ago. A letter of his was posted in the Chicago Tribune. I will link it here. I'm sure he sends his regards.

Oh my. That felt like a punch in the gut.

Its seems like our little community has lost its first member in action, rip.

quote:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
— Lt.-Col. John McCrae(1872 - 1918)

Au champ d'honneur, les coquelicots
Sont parsemés de lot en lot
Auprès des croix; et dans l'espace
Les alouettes devenues lasses
Mêlent leurs chants au sifflement
Des obusiers.

Nous sommes morts,
Nous qui songions la veille encor'
À nos parents, à nos amis,
C'est nous qui reposons ici,
Au champ d'honneur.

À vous jeunes désabusés,
À vous de porter l'oriflamme
Et de garder au fond de l'âme
Le goût de vivre en liberté.
Acceptez le défi, sinon
Les coquelicots se faneront
Au champ d'honneur.

-Jean Pariseau

Very powerful words, and very sobering. I haven't been around long enough to have met him, but his service and sacrifice will not be forgotten.

Thanks for sharing. His family and friends will be in my thoughts and prayers.

LVilla, if you're out there reading this, please contact me at the address in my profile. There are some people who'd like to do something for his family, but due to the anonymity of our interactions are generally reluctant to cold-contact them without introduction.

I didn't get along with him, at all,but I always wished him well. Just because you don't like someone doesn't mean you wish them ill ....... which is something that a lot of people on BOTH sides of the issues seem to forget at times.

I honor his sacrifice, and wish his family as much comfort as possible.

What a powerful letter...

I hardly remember BC from the time he was active. If I recall correctly he was often the center of heated debates here and there was a lot of conflict. That said, I also remember that he was and is a cherished member of this community, despite the differences in opinion. I'll miss him. [Frown]

I don't know what to say. I feel very broken up about this, even though I didn't know Bean personally. I feel like I knew him somehow...I mean I remember him and his posting, but I wouldn't have thought hearing about this would have affected me so. Yet it has. The letter was heartfelt and beautifully written...and I read it the first time through in shock and the second time through in tears.

My prayers are with his family and friends tonight. [Frown] May the Lord comfort and keep you.

I never talked with Bean personally. Despite any difference of opinion, and there would have been plenty had I participated in some threads of his, it still saddens me to hear this news.

I'll honor him by remembering who he was and what he did.

I remember reading BC's posts when he was active. I remember that he spoke with great fervor about his desire to serve in the military. I am glad that he got the opportunity to serve his country in the way he wanted to, but sad that he was unable to return to it.

May the spirits be kind to you, Scott.

The style I disliked so much here seems very different in a death letter. But was this a letter to his mother, and family? Or was it a pocket letter, in case something happened?

This is terrible. I remember his posts here, and that he often posted with arrogance and disrespect for others' opinions. But it was the arrogance of youth, and so many hatrackers have started out like that and later grown up to become valued and well-considered members of the community. I'm deeply saddened that BC will never get that chance, now. I honor his sacrifice which he made for all of us, and I concur with his view that we in the US live sheltered peaceful lives in a harsh and dangerous world. May we never cease to feel gratitude, respect, and love for their noble sacrifice.

A while back he sent me a draft of a story that he was writing. I regret not following through with a full review but I guess it's a little late for that [Frown]

It was called "Heinlein Entry". I can forward it to anyone who wants to read it. I'm going to reread it tonight.

EDIT: He sent it to me after I asked so I don't think it would be a problem for me to send it to others. If anyone has any objections just tell me.

I know I posted a little while ago, but I just recently went through and read a bunch of my old e-mails from him... it made me feel like I was in some tragic war movie... they were all like "I hope I get to meet you soon," and "another one was killed today, but don't worry about me, I can take care of myself"...

I never got along with him, and there were times I wished he would just go away. But I never wished he would die. Reading that letter, there's no doubt in my mind that was BC. I don't know what to say.

In all honesty I had so many terrible thoughts about him, which now feel like poison in my mind. I never wished him harm, but I didn't trust him. I rarely appreciated his thoughts and ideas, more often I wished he wouldn't post them. I didn't even extend the most basic level of trust -- believing he was who he said he was. I was convinced he was a troll.

Reading now that his posts were indeed honest and from the heart. And that he died protecting us all. ...I wish I had just swallowed my distrust and engaged with him on a more honest and earnest level while he was still here. Rather than just wishing he would shut up and go away.

It's too late now, but I'm sorry BC. Thank you for your sacrifice. My thoughts are with your family and loved ones. May you rest in peace.
