So, I got married. :-) Not gonna lie, its pretty flippin amazing. Especially because right now, in the summer, me and my wife have tons of time just sitting at home with no real responsibilities or anything. Currently we're watching a bunch of Doctor Who, but I have a 360 and would really like a game that both my and my wife could play.
Here's a rough idea of what we're looking for: Co-op, obviously. She says she likes more action type games, ones with clearly defined goals. Linear I guess could be a good word. I personally am more of a RPG fan, but when she popped in Oblivion she complained she had no idea where to go or what to do and said she really wanted clear objectives. She's not opposed to shooters, but she expressed a preference for melee combat. I plan on reclaiming my copy of Halo, but I think that or Gears or something along those lines is only moderately fun for her. And lastly, while this is somewhat subjective, a relatively simple control scheme. Well, really, a relatively simple game all around. She is not a gamer, never has been. That's not to say she doesn't enjoy it, but its not an intuitive thing for her.
Prior to gaming with her I mostly went at it alone, playing games like Bioshock, Mass Effect, Oblivion, etc, so I've never really looked too much into co-op games. We played Lord of the Rings: Conquest this past week, and we had a lot of fun with it, but its so gosh darn short. I'm thinking about grabbing a copy of Marvel Ultimate Alliance, since that has a co-op mode. Any other suggestions?

Residetn Evil 5 is awesome in co-op. It sucks to play through on single player due to Sheva's AI. There is a lot of fun to be had in both the campaign and the survival modes, unlocking weapons, upgrading them, unlocking infinite ammo and various ridiculous costumes.
Crackdown was a lot of fun, but i believe its system link or xbox live co-op only.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance, play alone or with multiple people, all kinds of super hero smashing fun

Honestly? WOW. It can be as free flowing as you want, or you can use the quests for definition,and is very co-op, but can be played alone. You can create characters you only use with each other, so you level close together, and still have ones you use solo......so if your solo one is a little bit higher level, you could login to that one and help your wife out (or she help you, depending on levels and what classes you each play).

I have this for the Wii but I'm pretty sure they make it for the 360 as well. Lego Star Wars is REALLY fun to play and has a great co-op mode.

Lego star wars is tons of fun and many levels are much easier to complete using co-op mode. My husband and I enjoyed Star Wars Battlefront in co-op mode, we would play Conquest and capture the galaxy.
I also like playing the Halo games on co-op and Gears of War.

Resident Evil 5 is NOT a simple control scheme.
The first shooter I've really enjoyed has been Left 4 Dead. It's better with 4 people, though, so if you don't have Live you might not want to get it. It is linear in that your goals are to kill the zombies, stay alive, and make it to the next safe room. It's also pretty short, although it has a lot of replay value, particularly if you play online and play versus. There are melee attacks, but it's mostly shooting, although apparently L4D2 will have chainsaws when it comes out.
Fable II is also a possibility, but the co-op is kinda annoying in that you lose camera control. But it's melee, and an RPG but one with clear quests and a breadcrumb trail to show you where to go next. So you can wander and explore if you like, but you never get the "what should I do" feeling.
Actually, Castle Crashers might be your best bet. It's an arcade game, so it's cheap, has a lot of replay value, is fun, simple and straightforward, and uses swords. It's also easy to play just for 20 - 30 minutes at a time if you want to, like sitting down to watch a TV show.

Dead Rising, but you would have to buy a coop add on (via xbox live) if you wanted to play together.
It's a playground game where you can use a bunch of weapons to kill zombies and other bad guys in a mall.

Europa Universalis III. It's not a console game and has no linearity, but its sheer awesome makes up for not having any of the qualities you are looking for. Indeed, just the fact that you're playing any other games proves that you are ignorant about what makes good games, and need my help to acquire the correct taste. So off you go and buy it.
