True Blood starts tonight.

You know, it was really cheesy for the first 3 or 4 episodes last season. But it quickly became one of the strongest new shows on tv.

The DVD's are out of season 1. But seriously, watch through AT LEAST until some of the murders start occuring.

Between it and Weeds, there's at least SOMETHING to get me through the summer.

Hmm, maybe not the right crowd? It did win a Golden Globe last year.

Anyway, the first episode was fairly good. I bored a time or two, but it's setting up some new plotlines.

Anyone? It's Anna Paquin? Created by Alan Ball from Six Feet Under?

Niki and I watch it. I do get awfully bored during the scenes with Bill and Sooky. There's enough stuff in the shows to keep me interested, but the relationship between those two just isn't very compelling to me.

Come to think of it, you're right. It was just the Bill / Sooky scenes.

The cast is certainly the strongest part of the show, but I'm starting to feel that Sooky's character is really the weakest spot. Ever other character has been growing and changing, but Sooky is kind of static. She just happens to be in the right places at the right times, and everybody else is actively advancing their own plotlines.

And while none of the other characters are likeable (some of them are rather cringe-worthy), they're all interesting.

That scene with vampire Eric was crazy. That guy is ENORMOUS!!! He was supposedly in the running for the role of Thor in the new movie. Instead, they got the little guy who played Jim Kirk's dad in the new Star Trek. Too bad, vampire Eric would have been a MUCH better fit.

I find Bill boring. Sooky is worth it just to look at. Especially in this past week's episode... but Bill bores me to tears.

SPOILER for last season's cliff hanger

I'm just glad the painted toes hanging out of the back of the car weren't Lafayette's!

End Spoiler.

Bill has (and can) be interesting. When he was running around doing vampire-y things and interacting with Eric. But the 90% of the time he's in fawn-over-Sooky mode, he bores me to tears.

I almost wished that Lafayette was dead. Though he's one of the strongest characters, this show's strength is that it doesn't shy away from killing characters. It's kind of sad to think that there are a number of "safe" characters now who're unlikely to die / be murderers.

I don't know, I like Lafayette and Tara better than Sooky.

I *like* them better, Jason too, but not in the normal way. Jim Carey is likeable. These characters are very interesting --- they're train wrecks waiting to happen --- but I'm not sure how likeable they are. Tara is a really mean, really F'ed up person; but I guess that makes for good tv.

I guess Lafayette is somewhat likeable. On paper, he'd be the most despicable of the bunch. But his humor and attitude make up for it.
