Anyone suggest an army? I like the Eldar to an extant (as they're Space Elves) but there's just something about Humanity in general in 40k that makes me want to take up a Bolter and join the fight FOR THE IMPERIUM!

I'm thinking Imperial Guard, they get alot of tanks I think.Or whatever is Snow+Russian themed.

Be warned, 40k is a very expensive (and time-consuming) hobby, and I know you're short on cash at the moment. I'd start by finding a friend who'll let you use some of their collection to form an army and play a few games.

It doesn't "have" to be expensive. My first mission companion was really into the Warhammer 40K, enough so that he had a lot of the rules memorized. Enough so that we just went to a CVS pharmacy and bought plastic army men and used them as miniatures to play with. It was actually a lot of fun on P-Days, we had a large table that we would set our scriptures on or different items to make terrain.

It's only super expensive you what you mean by "I think I want to get into warhammer is:

I think I want to start a collection of a lot of expensive miniatures.

I think I also want to spend a lot of money on paint supplies so I can spend a lot of time intricately painting said miniatures.

I think I want to spend a lot of money on raiding craft stores for materials so I can spend a lot of time building a miniature city and then spend a lot of money buying paint supplies so that I can't paint the miniature city, so that I can place my paid for, painted, miniatures in my bought, put together, and painted miniature city.

Most game stores require one use miniatures that are mostly from Games Workshop, and often that are minimally painted. Putting together a decent 1500 point army (and army sizes are trending upwards, so a lot of game stores are standardized on 2000) of just about anything will cost at least $150 to $200 (likely more, if he wants to have much choice in what is in the army) and several hours.

Yes, it is possible to play 40k by yourself without spending much at all -- though in that case, I'd recommend a number of other wargaming systems, as 40k's rules are pretty awful from a wargaming perspective.

To play it socially, you need to spend more, and the idea that it is only expensive for people doing all the things you list is wrong.

Quoted from "Crack is cheaper" from TvTropes:

quote:

Tabletop Wargames have it worse, including not only the above, but also adding in the cost of dozens or even hundreds of miniatures, paint and tools. The current heavyweight champion of price has to be the Warhammer 40000 Tau Manta from Forge World, at a hefty £875 sterling. That's roughly fifteen hundred dollars for Americans.

* Oh, you forgot to mention the fact that that model kits come unpainted and unassembled. Yep, you have to put them together, and then paint them. Not only are the paint nor brushes free, but a basic paint job can take about an hour per model, and a good one can take upwards of six. Then again, you could always pay someone else to paint them for you, or, if the place and people you play with don't mind, you can always just leave the models unpainted, but then everyone will make fun of you behind your back.
* To somewhat alleviate this, some collectors consider the actual assembling and painting to be as or more important than actually playing the game.
* On the other hand, Warhammer has started getting sneaky about these things, such as by decreasing the amount of points an individual unit is worth so you need more to have a complete army. There's a reason the elite Space Marines and Chaos units are so popular - you can buy less.
* The new unit box sets, most are 10 miniatures for $22. Many used to be 16 miniatures for $35, of course many were also metal and were $40 for 10 So Yeah

[Big Grin] I'ld be in it partially for the painting once I did have the monies.

If you want to play in a tournament, models often need to be primed and painted with at least three colors. Some stores also have rules requiring painting in order to play there at all. How much you can proxy is often limited as well.

WH40k is that annoying kid who, when you're playing with action figures, decides that not only is his action figure good with katanas and guns, he can also teleport, read people's minds, and has shields that block all damage. It's over-the-top fantasy-death-space-war-megaoperatic-demireligious-scifi wank.

This translates out well for things like DoW I through DoW: Soulstorm which were pretty good, all things considered.

It translates out terribly for everything else, including books about the canon.

The heavier someone gets into WH40K, the more likely they are to be completely bleeding insane. Crack is cheaper. It is a game that caters primarily but not exclusively to a demographic of people who have a giant hole to fill in their social lives and feel as if they can fill it with expensive miniatures.

Samprimany, i really hope you were not trying to convince Blanyne to not get into these. Over the top fantasy, death, or space games sound awesome, mix them together and you made the messiah of miniture gaming.

I once wanted to play, them I thought it would be just as easy to play with painted pebbles and I could make my own rules up. Then I decided to learn to longboard. I made the right choice.

I have been very tempted by Warhammer, both the 40K and fantasy types. Miniature games appeal to me a great deal. I even went so far as to research all of the different races and pick which ones I'd play (Necrons and Lizardmen, also maybe Orks and Orcs), read all of the different strategy articles, put together spreadsheets of what units to buy, etc.

I never did get around to buying anything. The players who played it at the shops I saw scared me off a bit. I wish I could find a set of geeks in real life that are more like me.

I do not like the rules system for Warhammer 40K at all, but I think the world is fascinating. I particularly love the Eisenhorn, Ravenor and Horus novels (basically anything by Dan Abnett I guess, although that may say more about Dan Abnett than it does about the world as a whole)

I used to play 40k, and got started on Warhammer Fantasy but didn't play that one as much before getting tired of the majority of people playing it. About 20% off the people who'd come to the local gaming shop on warhammer days were reasonable and fun to play with. The rest were a major headache.

I did have a personal favorite thing which made playing with the lamer gamers still perversely enjoyable: So many of them went nuts for space marines, especially terminators. Termies were considered ridiculously unstoppable. But I played Chaos and loved finding ways to quickly and easily bypass terminator armor. Often spending points on these things would make it so I'd lose the battle overall, but it was worth it to watch somebody's face drop when their precious terminator squad got wiped out before they could do jack. [Evil Laugh]

I loved converting and painting miniatures though. Probably spent twice as much time on that as actually playing the game. I played Chaos so I could do lots of model hacks and customs. My Thousand Suns squad and Possessed Marines squad are many times cooler than the out-of-box GW ones.

This is the opposite of the analogy you're trying to make. Crack is supposed to be cheap -- that's it's primary appeal. Of course it's cheaper than something expensive.

Crack and WH40K are both habits. To say that is to say sardonically that getting addicted to crack is cheaper than getting hooked on WH40K.

Pen and paper RPG's are so much cheaper and more fun in my opinion. Use your imagination and you don't even need models. Especially if you have a group of close friends that know what they're doing [Smile]

Have you thought about trying to get in as a player rather than as a DM?

If you lived in Utah, I'd find a place for you. Are you certain their aren't any hobby stores that host D&D nights once or twice a week? They have one in my area where you need only show up with a level one character sheet and they will assign you to one of five tables running various campaigns (obviously as your character levels you advance through the tables). They encourage everyone to eventually try their hand at DMing, but it's not required, they're enough people willing to DM all the time that you can get away with just playing.

In a college town like yours, it's likely there are a few groups around, try the hobby stores and ask them if they know of any DMs who run groups. Remember gamers have to shop somewhere.

Warhammer40k is a fine game, but as far as hobbies go, it will get expensive with even the most basic commitment, and you've mentioned you don't have alot of money. You already download D&D materials anyway, you might as well play D&D and save yourself alot of money while still having a great time if you do alittle research and intend to be fun to play with.

I'm sorry we couldn't have any games on Uerth, unfortunately the proprietor of the site decided he didn't have enough time to maintain it, but I think it's extremely unlikely that Uerth is the only website where players meet up and play games using mapquest and skype.

Switch the facial hair around and shift some 100 pounds over and eliminate the effiminateness and you got it.

Basically its a 2 story house with a basement on a cul-de-sac street where most old people go to retire and opposite from me is he local beech/tourist attraction. Behind my house is a few acres of swamp that was bought from the municipality.

I am half way between Ottawa and Montreal.

not sure if this link works. http://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&tab=wl

So far of my D&D recruitment efforts I think I have one of my friends who wants a swashbuckler as a Johny Depp/Jark Harkness expy.

Tried his girlfriend who was interested but made the colossal mistake of asking her "friends" about it who are the stereotypical gossip girl bunch.

His brother seems interested.

And I think another one who wants a psionic but hes been notoriously unreliable for arriving on time or at all.

I have another friend whose going on vacation who likes to play but he prefers to DM and force me into a butt monkey role which I'm not to please or eager to get into to but who knows maybe he will compromise on co-DM'ing.

Contacted two regular DnDers from the college and they're interested but haven't confirmed their attendance yet.
