I will be going to visit a friend in Atlanta, Georgia and he asked me what I might like to do when I'm down there. I've been looking around online and so far the aquarium, CNN center, and World of Coca-Cola look interesting but I was wondering if anyone here had any better suggestions.

edit: I prefer nice places to visit which don't require an admissions ticket (I've already seen enough museums this summer!) but those are hard to find online hence the list above.

Stone Mountain. Pay per carload but they have nice trails, sky buckets, and a pretty cool laser show on the face of the mountain after dark.

As far as places without admission, Little Five Points is a neat little arts/counter-culture neighborhood, similar to some liberal arts college towns. Bunch of neat shops, and buskers and good food.

places with admission that are totally worth it, there is The Center For Puppetry Arts. It's exactly what it sounds like. A museum devoted to puppets and puppetry. It's awesome!

Dad's Garage is a decent improv theater.

and right now I can't come up with anything more. There is a lot more you can do, but at this moment I am drawing a blank.

That is all.

Stay hydrated. Maybe buy a parasol.

Futurama informed me that there is a Delta hub to check out.

Georgia sucks. And it's HOT. And HUMID. And the BUGS.

Just don't come. Trust me. If your friend is a true friend he/she will understand.

The aquarium isn't worth it in my opinion. It's extremely crowded and has far too few viewing windows. The layout is very odd. They have these massive tanks and you see only a very small portion of them. The Tennessee aquarium is much better. If for some reason you've never (or not in quite a while) been to an aquarium it's not a waste of money, but there are better experiences.

How mobile will you be? Metro area or just the city itself?

No chance of that! He was raised in Louisiana and Texas and would kill to have me visit the South!

Okay that's good to know. I'm only going to be there for a few days so I'd rather relax then spend my time going to mediocre attractions.

We'll have a car and be around 20 minutes from downtown Atlanta.

I'm going to disagree and say that the Aquarium was absolutely awesome. Maybe it's changed in the three years since I've been there? It was by far the best thing we did in Atlanta.

We camped at Stone Mountain, which was a bit of pain because the ground is almost literally stone, which made setting up a tent more difficult than I imagined, but the area itself was kind of neat, and if we'd had more time I would have liked to see the laser show and I would have liked to visit the top of the mountain.

I'll weigh in on the Aquarium and say that public opinion seems to go w/ Lyrhawn; most people think it's amazing. But I'm w/ Blue Shadow. I don't like it, I far prefer the Chattanooga Aquarium and for the same reasons.

A lot of it is because to me it feels more like a theme park than a slice of nature. There's a huge central indoor mall type area, and the different sections of the aquarium (and gift shops, and restaurants) are accessed via return to the center, rather than organically leading from one to the other. If they'd done more to make that central area seem more outdoorsy I might have found it tolerable, but as it is I feel like I'm being sent from nature back to the arcade. And the crowds are massive, but some days are more tolerable than others that way. IIRC, the ticketing calendar page gives you some indication of how many tickets have been sold for the various times.

But the sea creatures themselves, are, of course, amazing.
