Today's xkcd comic talks about the Ender series.

It's technically today's. They post at midnight, but if you're in the right time zone you can see it a couple hours before midnight the day before. So there. [Razz]

That possibility had occurred to me. However, Nick's post is clearly timestamped yesterday. Ergo, it must have been in regards to yesterday's comic.

Unless Nick is psychic . . . O_O

Huh? XKCD's website says that new comics come out on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. They actually post right after midnight, and the author lives on the east coast, so if you live further west you can see them late at night the day before.

My sarcasmometer is properly calibrated and operating within specified parameters. Perhaps your transmitter is faulty.

Rats, I checked to see if anyone else posted it, but Nick's post didn't say xkcd in the subject so I missed it.

Fortunatey I can just delete the thread and no one will ever know...

Oh, wait. I took Dagonee's pledge. Curses!

I was going to post it, too, but I recognized Nick's thread title from the alternate text from the comic.

Edit: Whoops. I mean the text from the last panel.

We should just have a perpetual xkcd thread, since the comic is linked to so much.

Considering the subject of today's comic, I figured it would be appropriate to bump this thread.

I sadisticly want this to turn into nasty grudge between OSC and the anonymous XKCD. Intricate negative mentionings of XKCD's comics in Uncle Orson Reviews Everything, and comics where Ender asks too many questions about space travel/time relativity and Mazer slips up and its the Force.

As likely to happen as my fantasy of Oprah vs. Alice Cooper.

That is actually more of what I envisioned would happen when I read Ender's Game. But then again, didn't they post on sites that had regular traffic and bit more prestige?

Also it seems forums had a public sector and a private sector where member who were generally recognized as good contributors were allowed to post by invitation only?

Well I dont know his name, I think Megan is his girlfriend, but either way Im comfortable just refering to him as xkcd.

To elaborate on how impossible my Oprah vs. Alice Cooper media melee fantasy is... Rob Zombie is the one who gets them to settle thier arguments and speak civilly, resulting in the divorce of his marriage to Sheri Moon-Zombie. Its a strange place in my head.

Not to mention the casual visibility in most online identities, I remember Peter insisting that they use adult accounts (as opposed to minor accounts) to gain validity in forums and not be ridden off as idealistic children.

The internet while somewhat accurate prediction for when OSC wrote it grew to be a size much greater then OSC could possibly have predicted, I think he suspected it would be heavily government controlled or hoped it would. I think the implied justification was the new cold war with the Second Warsaw Pact.

Randall Monroe. I believe that the subtitle of the comic used to include "by Randall Monroe", but you can still find it here:

On the other hand, that effect can kinda be seen now in some limited sectors such as software blogging, where decent writers can become somewhat famous and influential (within certain circles at least).

As described in the book, Locke and Demosthenes were a somewhat odd combination of blogger, columnist, and political pundit. Yeah, it isn't really possible to do that now, but it isn't that far of a stretch to imagine a time when it is possible.

Something along the lines of independent political blogger ->columnist at small commentary site -> columnist at larger, more well known site -> whatever their equivalent of syndication is.

Throw in a period of somewhat unprecedented social and political change, and it might be possible for someone persuasive enough to have an impact.

If anything, I find the most implausible part to be the idea that they could have ever maintained their anonymity as long as they did in the series.

Oh sure, some people did find their identities, I just mean that it's hard to imagine being that prominent and maintaining public anonymity on anything resembling the modern internet.

That was a great talk. I went back and looked up the comic about sexism on the internet that the one girl mentioned. It's even funnier now rereading it. (linky)

I also loved that he had a very well-thought out plan for what to do if raptors attacked the building.

Y'know I'm pretty happy I probably did not actually have high speed internet when I read the book, it seems anyone who reads it nowadays can't enjoy it because the internet developed differently.

Uh, I'm not sure but I get the sinking sense that this is one of the points that OSC "revised" in later editions of the novel. Someone with an earlier edition than mine would have to confirm that theory.
