Basically it seems my windows drive died as vista refuses to boot so I went and got a new terrabyte hard drive but my vista cd is scrathed, i have the keys saved elsewhere but i need a replacement disk or an image, anyone know where I can get a vista disk? I presume all disks/images have all versions though i need business specifically.
And I dont have money/time to order a replacement disk from microsoft. I bought my disk legally and simply need the instation disk replaced or a suitable disk.

How bad is the scratch? Maybe it'll read fine on a different drive. Then you could make a new disc from it or copy the files onto a flash drive or something.
Do they still sell those Skipdoctors in stores? You could try that.

Sounds likely. I just checked and our school MSDN-AA gives out Vista Business. (And Windows 7 Professional ... maybe I should seriously start to think about upgrading)

Don't ACM and IEEE student memberships also provide msdnaa? If there's a branch of either at your school, you might want to join up. You'd have to pay the membership fee, but it's still a lot cheaper than getting the software on your own.
Plus, joining one of those is usually a decent idea anyways if you're in a related field.

A lot of video and game stores also have disk-scratch-repair/resurfacing machines. Because after decades of optical disks being the dominant media for music, data, and video, a large number of people still seem to be clueless about how to handle a disk without rendering it unreadable.
Excuse me, that turned into a rant somewhere along the way. But the advice is sound. Check your local video or game shop.

If you do in fact have a license key, I may be able to burn you an ISO image from an MSDN CD.
I do believe that's acceptable use under the MSDN licensing, isn't it? The importance thing is the license, not the software, no? Have to look it up...

Email? Um, I think a disc image might be a bit over the email attachment limit for most email services.

Well I mean I have a server I could give the password credentials for and then he could ftp it to it and then I download it off of it and then delete it when I'm done.

Well I pirated a copy of vista but it wont boot from the cd, any possibilities? Seems to run fine from the cd rom drive on other computers.

Temporarily swap the CD drive with one from another computer. Or try to get the scratch buffed out as others have already suggested.

Why have the middle man?
Because you mightn't actually be entitled to a CD from your previous uni. A middleperson/friend seems like a simple solution. Hitch-free.
Anyway, at this point it looks like you're just going to pirate a copy--that's legit enough for me.

Relevent how? I paid for my disk or technically my school did on my behalf.
The problem is that I cant use MS tech support they need a special seriel key thats distinct from the liscense key thats on the sticker on the copies they sell.
With an educational sticker I do not have the serial in which to contact microsoft technical support.

Just teasing you, Blayne, but I wanted to point out that you can't expect to get support for using a pirated copy of Windows, except from a community of pirates. I'm not criticizing you for getting a copy of something you owned legitimately, I'm just saying it's unrealistic to come to a place like Hatrack and ask for help with technical problems with booting a pirated cd.
I'm sure there's a guide for how to use what you downloaded, but I don't expect that many people are familiar with it who haven't done it themselves.
I suggest you google "make a windows cd bootable" (without the quotation marks) and variations on that query. Or, wait for a disc, or find one to borrow, or try to fix the one you have. Posts: 4287 | Registered: Mar 2005
