I'm getting a Wii for Christmas but I'm going game-shopping this weekend because I get some special discounts through the company I work for.

I'm largely interested in getting some Guitar Hero/Rock Band games but there are just so many versions out that its overwhelming. I'll be playing only with the guitar since I know firsthand how loud the drumkit is and even I don't hate the neighbors in my apartment that much.

I know the Wii now supports downloadable content but are all the songs on the previous versions available for download? Or is some stuff exclusive to actually buying the older versions and "track packs." I imagine the Beatles Rock Band content may be exclusive to buying the disk, but if I buy Rock Band 2, can I just download all of the music from Rock Band 1? Same question for all the Guitar Hero versions. And what is the most recent Guitar Hero for Wii?

Also, does anyone have an opinion on the Wii Fit? I've read mixed reviews regarding its accuracy, effectiveness, and "fun" level.

I have Rock Band 2, though I don't get to play it much, so I can't answer your downloads question...

But if we're in that genre - Rock Band + Wii Fit = Dance Dance Revolution. That game is tons of fun, especially if you turn off the option to you use the wii remote. I'm certain you can burn off a fair amount of calories on DDR as you get better at it.

Here's a question: The DDR for Wii wouldn't happen to work with the Mario Dance Pad from the Gamecube?

I don't know about Guitar Hero or Rock Band, but for I like Wii Active better than Fit. It's less expensive and more work out centered. If you use actual weights instead of the resistance band it's even better. It doesn't have the pad though, and it's not really game centered.

There's a survival horror game called "Winter" or something, its not out yet but should be a playable demo out somewhere, it looks really cool and really scary.

Since you are on Wii, you wouldn't be able to export RB1 songs to RB2.

I'm pretty sure Guitar Hero doesn't do exports. I'm not sure how compatible their DLC is. They're on Guitar Hero 5 and they also have Band Hero.

Wii Fit is okay. You'll want to get the sequel, Wii Fit Plus. It has everything from the first game plus some more games and exercises. The balance games are fun, but I wouldn't expect to get fit from it.

What do you mean by export?

I guess what I mean is, if I buy "Guitar Hero; World Tour" which works for downloadable songs, do I have to buy "Guitar Hero: Legends of Rock" if I want those songs or are all song from older versions available in the online song catalog? I know there is atleast some overlap cause I was looking at songs by the Pixies.

Export means you take the songs that are on the disc and copy them to the hard drive so you could play them on the new game. The Wii doesn't let you do this for Rock Band, and Guitar Hero doesn't do it at all.

I don't think they sell the catalogs from old games as downloadable Content.

Rock Band Beatles is awesome, so I definitely recommend that. But if you're looking for more variety for your buck, Rock Band 2 and GHWT are great on the Wii (with the exception of no exporting mentioned above, of course).

If you're just getting the game and a guitar, though, I recommend getting the World Tour guitar even if you go with Rock Band. It's just better.

Yes. DDR Hottest Party DOES work with the pad from Mario Mix. Works great, no problems.

Blasphemer! The Rockband 2 wireless guitar is the best. All the guitars in the GH line are really ukeleles (in size, at least). [Smile]

Re: wii fit, I thought it was interesting and I love the concept, but the activities are either interesting or constructive, never both for me.

I love my wii fit plus. I like doing yoga though. I also am having a blast with a lot of the new games. I thought they did a great job on the expansion and I found it worth it. When I was regularly working out on my wii fit, I did not lose weight, but I did lose inches. However, my starting point was not great. I was very out of shape. So, if you are going to the gym every day, no, you won't find the workout part useful. But if you are not, it is great. And the wii fit plus is way, way better then the regular wii fit.

For working out, there is a new wii game that I saw an ad for and am curious about. It comes with a little camera that watches your movements and lets you know if you are doing things wrong. With the camera, I imagine cheating is way harder then it is with the wii fit (the pushups are easy to cheat on). But other then thinking that is a neat concept, I have no actual knowledge. I think it came out a week or two ago.

This isn't correct. Band Hero can use songs from Guitar Hero 5, Guitar Hero World Tour, and I believe one other game. (Guitar Hero Hits or something like that)

But, like Rock Band, that doesn't work on the Wii so it's a moot point, I guess.

For Wii, I think you'll just want to go by which game has a set list that you like (Wikipedia has them all, as I assume to the game web sites), as well as downloadable songs which you want. Some of the games focus more on "rock" (like Guitar Hero 5), while others have more "pop" stuff (like Band Hero). I believe any Rock Band game can use any Rock Band DLC (downloadable content). Guitar Hero has been less consistent, where DLC for Guitar Hero 2 won't work with Guitar Hero 3. I think their more recent stuff is better about that, though.

If there's overlap between DLC and the built-in tracks, it's very light. Ironically, perhaps, I've found that a fair number of the built-in songs for one franchise have started to show up as DLC for the other. So some built-in Rock Band songs can now be purchased as DLC for Guitar Hero, for instance.

Also, Lego Rock Band is cute.

And I prefer the Guitar Hero guitar.

With the exception of Rock Band Beatles. Probably because of the multi-vocal support that the other RB games don't have.

I wonder if that's something they plan on expanding to the main game in the near future. Sure would be awesome.

Thanks Herblay!

Bok, do you mean the GH guitars are small? Cause I'm a short girl with short arms and that's fine for me. But the wireless part would be super awesome. Is there a wireless GH guitar?

I was just going to get a bundle but of the four stores in my area where I can use my discount, only one had a GH5 bundle and may sell it before I go in on Friday. So I may be stuck getting the guitar and games separate?

GH and RB guitars are cross-compatible, right?
