The relationship between the Na'vi, the All Mother, and their Ancestors within the trees reminded me distinctly of the relationship between the Pequenino's and their Ancestors/Father trees.
Since OSC and Cameron have had past experiences, it would make sense that he decided to base some of his work off OSC's Lusitania.
Anyone else notice this as they were watching Avatar?

Certainly, though I personally think that they were different enough that it didn't bother me so much as it made me say: "yeah, this is nice, but I also liked how OSC did the same basic concept."

Agreed. Also, another thing I'm noticing here as I'm reading Wikipedia..."The clan attempts to transplant her "soul" into her Na'vi avatar with the aid of the Tree, though they are too late and she dies." Reminds me of the Pequeninos being sent into their third life.

The purpose was to find out if others were having similar thoughts. As is evident in the multiple times I asked "Anyone else notice...?".
