Apparently that can really happen. (Link's in Norwegian but pictures are universal.) Its not Disney, though; the article mentions that the humans that helped them off the ice ("the challenge is to get there before the foxes do") set out with rifles ready, in case there were broken bones. The animals were ok, though.

I know in the case of a lot of early Disney movies, (well, Alice in Wonderland), that a lot of the parts that were animated were acted out and photographed, so the animators had models to draw. Now I'm wondering if the animators tossed some deer on ice so they knew how to draw them.

And many people do. The other interesting story in that newspaper today was of the guy they pulled out from under the ice. He was the third or fourth who'd gone through, and in the quote from the policeman politely asking people to respect the "Thin ice" warning signs, you could see that their patience was getting to be thin as well.
